Had the pleasure of being able to visit here last week. What an absolute gem of a place! Its clear that the guys who look after the place are so passionate and knowledgeable. Great exhibits and the Spitfire story is brilliant. Highly recommended.

This Montemurlo museum is a wonderful example of how a group of passionate people have brought alive the Allied defense of the Gothic Line through a collection of items found in the surrounding countryside. They even have the remains of a Spitfire shot down in the area and memorabilia of South Africa’s involvement in the campaign. Special mention should be made of the room dedicated to the paintings of a South African soldier Donald Orr. He was stationed in the area and through his large number of paintings left a wonderful history of that time. Well worth a visit.
They told us that there will be an exhibition entitled ‘The Soldier who painted peace’ and a book launch at the Duomo in Prato early September this year.

One of the best museums I ever was. The guide was so friendly and super cool. He told us everything about the pieces they have. All the stuff like weapons and equipment they have are very interesting and good presented. We will definitely visit again. I can recommend this museum to everybody who is interested in WW2 history

My grandfather was an artist all his life, but from 1943 to 1945 he was also a soldier. During this time he was stationed in Egypt and then, as Allied forces advanced through an increasingly liberated Italy, he was based between Montecasino, Trasimeno and eventually Prato (a small town outside of Florence). He was part of the 6th South African Armoured Division, in the Signals Corps.
Throughout this journey, he continued to capture people and scenery from the places he found himself. These gentle water-colours are now resident in this small museum in Prato, Montemurlo, curated by a spectacular team of local historians.
The story that brought these paintings from a dusty attic in Cape Town, back to where they were originally created, is truly compelling. This however, paled in comparison to the experience of seeing my grandfather’s work, displayed in a dedicated room of the museum. Seeing so many scenes of other soldiers (other people’s grandfathers), so far from their homes, working with Italians to secure the countries future, was an exceptionally humbling experience. I was so thankful to two of the museum’s curators, Giuseppe Aucello and Rudj Baglioni, who opened for us on a Sunday, and shared so many of their own stories of how this unique repository of history had come to be.
The Museo Storico della Linea Gotica is simply a must-see if you are in any way a student of WWII. It’s collection of soldier memorabilia, “mined” from the farmlands of Montemurlo, presents an exquisite time-capsule of life throughout the Italian conflict. The history, together with the personal pride I felt to have seen my grandfather’s art so proudly displayed, made the journey to this quaint museum a highlight of my Italian travels. It’s not the most common of touristy destinations, but if you can, go. You will be richer for it.

This fascinating museum is a must for World War 2 Buffs. Many Allied troops passed through this area in WW2 and the museum is filled with relics and artifacts found by volunteers in the mountains where fierce fighting occurred. Every display is carefully explained by excellent guides. The museum is also home to a unique collection of paintings by South African soldier Donald Orr, who documented the route of 6th SA Armoured Division between 1943 and 1945. Many of the paintings were painted in Tuscany and are an extraordinary snapshot of life in Italy at that time. Many thanks to the amazing team at the museum - you have created a wonderful legacy for future generations.

One of the things we really wanted to do while in Italy was to visit the War Museum at Montemurlo where a dear friend’s father’s paintings had been donated. This week we had the pleasure of meeting with Giuseppe and Rudy from the Museo Storico della Linea Gotica. We had especially come here to view some of the 400 odd paintings of war-time artist, Donald Orr, who had painted scenes as he travelled up from Egypt to Montemurlo. His paintings depict the beauty of the countryside as he travelled and we felt quite privileged to have had the opportunity to view these. Giuseppe gave us an in-depth guided tour of this relatively small, but extremely well laid out museum. What history, and so well displayed. This is “the real war” stuff, from all sides and made up of relics all found in the area. We watched a short video entitled “Here Again” which showed the return of Lt Leonard Williams DFC, a British pilot who crashed his Spitfire into a field near Prato on 23 October 1944; and his visit back to the area on 23 October 2003. We were lucky enough to receive a copy of this CD to take away with us. One can see, on display, parts of his Spitfire that were dug up after being buried some 9 meters underground for some 50 years or so.
In their own words, the volunteers here are “investing in the next generations, teaching them the beauty of peace”
This museum should not be missed if you are in this area. It is part of important history and should be preserved at all costs. Thank you Giuseppe and Rudy for giving up your time and allowing us to view your museum.
