Achingly beautiful in its simplicity, this is well worth a visit. You simply collect the key from outside a local house and have the church to yourself if you wish. Plenty of helpful guides available too.

Spiritually uplifting to visit this famous church which is an oasis of calm, set in a small village high up on the hills. It is incredible to see the early architecture and the use of Roman stone cannibalised from other sites nearby no doubt. The serenity of the building is lovely and it was stimulating to be able to sit and meditate and pray in such an ancient Christian site.

This is a lovely, peaceful church well worth visiting. You feel you could almost touch the peacefulness, both in the Church and in the graveyard.

Would be even better if you could actually see the church from the road in all its glory... but, unfortunately it has been hidden from view by overgrown trees, which could do with a trim!!

This is a wondrous small Church and amazing to see it standing proud after having been on the site since around 675AD.It also has the oldest sun dial in its original setting in the Country and lots more of significant historical interest.

What a find! This is a lovely little Saxon church, in its original grounds. A fascinating look at one of the oldest churches in England, with excellent notes and descriptions.

1300 years old and still going strong.
A magnificent old church believed built from stone previously used nearby by the Romans at one of their forts.
One could spend time here just sitting and reflecting.
The church contains some interesting documentation which lists the main features of the church.
I can remember the days when churches were always open. This cannot be the case today - but it is as good as. The keys to the church hang on a hook outside a local resident's home and the visitor is entrusted to unlock and lock-up the church. There is electric lighting inside the church.

This is an ancient church and in fact I think is the oldest complete Saxon Church in England. We had driven past the sign on the road several times while visiting the area and we finally decided to go and have a look and we weren't disappointed. A sign on the gate tells you where to get the key which was hanging on a wall outside a house behind the church. The architecture is amazing - a 7th century Saxon church with celtic influences built with stones from a Roman fort on Hadrian's wall. It doesn't get much more historic than that. There are many interesting features and there is plenty of information inside and you can purchase souvenir booklets with the honesty box. Well worth the visit..

Visited the church on 3rd August 2019, picking up the key from 28 Saxon Green - hangs outside the front door of the house so you don't disturb the neighbour, although I did wake up a lovely greyhound which was taking a snooze in the sun.

Very interesting church, plenty of information guides internally which point out the historical and architectural features. Certainly a feeling of stepping back into history.

Spent a good hour looking around the church both internally and externally and well worth the visit.

This is an absolutely beautiful building that I cannot get enough of. Built with stones from Hadrians time, from the wall itself. It is amazing to stand there and be transported in time to 1,300 years ago. Stones are from the Romans, who left Britain in the 400's. The wall they built lay dormant for 300 years before the Saxons repurposed them into this beautiful church. If you love history you will be moved by this. This church was built 300 years before the Normans conquered Britain.
