Wow! What an incredible place… superbly restored and curated. Brilliantly helpful and knowledgable guides that helped to unlock the secrets of this magnificent building and its past.
Look out for the medieval graffiti and protection marks in the chapel. Worth the visit on their own!
Wished I lived closer as the food in the cafe is fresh, delicious and plentiful. No need to go anywhere else!
Travelled up from London to visit and it was absolutely worth it!

So much love, passion and care has been lavished on this place that it cannot fail to please. The guides are beyond helpful and the tea room staff a pleasure to deal with (not to mention excellent food). If you are in the area take the time to visit, you won’t be disappointed

Apart from THAT chapel (and don't miss the lovely Peterhouse portrait of the great man in the vestry) the Wyatt apartments are exquisite; they've had some of his drawings and accounts reproduced on handle-able card and paper: a nice idea, as is the David Jenkins 1984 bedroom installation. Superb Episcopal portraits from c 1600 onwards, by Lawrence and, earlier, v talented anonymous artists. Nice Chantrey bust of Barrington as counterpart to the fine monument by the same hand in the cathedral. V pretty bits of Georgian wallpaper revealed here and there. Exquisite 18th ceiling above the room where Chas I rested on his way to his Scotch embarrassment. And of course there are the Zurbaran sons of Jacob returned from restoration at the Frick; the guide in that room is very helpful abt what the Frick restorers discovered. Back in THAT chapel don't be so overwhelmed by Cosin's extraordinary woodwork (less gothic than that at Sedgefield and the cathedral) that you miss the 19th c narrative stained glass. Worth every penny. Lovely enthusiastic staff.

Food festival was excellent. Plenty to do and lots of events free of charge including some great music from John Adams. Can’t wait till next year...hopefully more seats so we can relax with food and free entertainment. Well done organisers

Durham is the land of the Prince Bishops. This castle tells their story. It has been very well renovated. Great to see all the Zurbarán sons of Jacob. The café is worth a visit- lovely fish cakes. We look forward to the opening of the walled garden. Enjoyed walking through the deer park.

We took the opportunity to visit Auckland Castle on the day it reopened and were not disappointed.
At £14 per person, at first look it seemed quite expensive but compared with some other places we could have visited (such as National Trust properties), the entrance fee was actually par for the course.
We were greeted courteously at the gate, taken to the shop to buy our tickets (though we could have bought in advance online) and then shown to the entrance. There we were given a quick overview of what we might see and set off in the right direction.
At every point in our trip around the castle, there were knowledgeable and very enthusiastic guides to tell us more about what we were seeing. They really enhanced the experience.
In addition, there were folders of detailed information in each room and two interactive information points, both of which were very good.
The castle itself is very interesting - packed with history and works of art.
The cafe was very nice, with lots of indoor seating and a large courtyard area (which is where we sat). The food and beverages were of a good quality and reasonably priced.
Overall, this was a fascinating, enjoyable and educational visit and, since we spent over four hours on our self-guided tour (including a break for lunch), it was good value for money in the end.
We would definitely recommend it.

Wanted to support this local attraction and was certainly worth a visit. The staff were friendly and informative at the castle however I thought £10 was a little steep for what we saw. Not somewhere you would return to time and again unless they added more to it. Progress is being made on the gardens and should be looking good for 2022. The country park is open to the public free of charge and has some really pleasant walks.

I am frankly staggered by the new Spanish Gallery that has just opened in Bishop Auckland. It is far larger than I expected; it contains many works of superb quality; it has some very imaginative presentation, especially on the upper floors; and the quality of the lighting throughout is absolutely excellent. What an amazing, thrilling gift to this County Durham market town, to the wider area and indeed to the whole country.

I visited here on the day of the Bishop Auckland food festival as I hadn’t seen it since the refurbishment. I did think £10 was pricey for a one off visit considering a volunteer told me it used to be £12.50 for a 12-month ticket before covid. I thought the castle was fascinating as I never knew the history of it but I was disappointed to find out that 4 rooms were out of bounds because of covid (even though everything is meant to be back to ‘normal’ and there was a huge food festival going on outside). The volunteers were very friendly and explained in depth the history of the place as well as the rooms that we couldn’t see. They also kindly kept my bags from the festival so that I didn’t have to carry them around. I didn’t have time for the gift shop or café as I only had an hour to wander around, but the toilets were nice. Outside, there are lovely grounds and the deer park, with work still being done on the area.

Do you need tickets to do the walk around the grounds? Are the tickets just to access the house?

You need a ticket which allows you to both.
There is staff on the entrance gate to the gardens.
