The welcoming friendly staff and amazing view from the Tower explained by a member of the staff, the clear and frequent info boards in the castle, the amazing food and super friendly café staff, the files of clear and illustrated info in each room, the mirrors provided for viewing the ceiling, the audio selections adding to the atmosphere in each room all made our visit 5*! It should definitely accompany every visit to Durham Cathedral!

The Auckland project comprises a propose built tower to view Bishop Auckland, a mining art museum (excellent) and a Spanish Art Gallery (opened by Prince Charles and the Queen of Spain in April 2022). Would easily full a whole day.
Spanish Gallery has world class Spanish art from their golden age. Stunningly presented in a newly designed space. Very friendly, helpful, informative and passionate staff.
Hopefully the attraction will draw visitor to help regenerate the Bishop Auckland.
Oddly there are no 'brown signs' to help find the attraction within the town or from the A1. Surprisingly too I haven't read any seen any media reviews in the national press

We visited the Castle and the museum. Unfortunately for COVID restriction we didn't managed to get tickets for the garden and the tower and steam train are under refurbishing.

We’ve been meaning to visit the project for some time and a cold, wet Sunday provided the perfect opportunity. What a delightful place! The ‘staff’ many of whom are volunteers are welcoming and informative, the history of the Palace and the Bishops involved in it is fascinating and explained with enthusiasm and knowledge. The chapel is absolutely beautiful but this is just the prelude to the rooms above which ooze character. It was also lovely to be assured that the chairs are for sitting in, the table is laid with the intention of having visitors interact with the setting and the videos are not too long. At the end of our visit we enjoyed a pot of tea and a roll which was served to our table. The roll itself was crusty and tasty unlike so many of the insipid offerings in such place and filled to the brim with flavourful ham and cheese.
We purchased the yearly ticket as we live locally and will certainly return to the Palace together with a visit to the art gallery and the viewing tower which we are saving for another day. We spent over 2 hours in the Palace and the cafe so allow ample time for your visit if you are travelling into the area.

There town seems to have come together through the Aukland Project. From shuttle buses at the car park to multi entry tickets, the Auckland Project has embraced the key features of the town in an organised and helpful way.
You can pick and mix or take a full ticket.

Auckland Tower, Bishops Palace and Mining Art Gallery were definately worth a visit. The new tower and renovated castle are excellent. Despite the wind and rain, the views from the tower were great. There is more to come over the next few years and it will be quite an attraction when complete. Staff were friendly and informative - very interesting buildings and history. We were particularly impressed with the training for volunteers and the apprentice scheme in collaberation with a local college. Nice restaurant. Well done!
