A stroll along the river is the morning was the perfect foil to a good breakfast. It offers exception views of the castle and cathedral from below and gives a very real feel for how they must have awed pilgrims coming to the shrine. We were lucky to see a mother duck trying to teach her tiny brood to climb a weir - a real lesson in perserverance

I downloaded a Durham city walk from a website and printed it off and it mostly followed the riverside which was so peaceful. It was easy to walk on the well maintained paths.
There are some great views of the Cathedral from the riverside and the path takes you to some interesting places where past residents lived.
An excellent way to spend a sunny day.

Because of the way Durham has developed, the river is a dominant part of the city and the riverside walk a must experience.

Although the Cathedral and Castle are probably the most visited attractions in Durham, I reckon that if you could only do one thing - you should take this walk.
There are good pathways on each side of the river and the views of the aforementioned buildings, as well as the various bridges are really lovely. The path goes through woodland and there are plenty of benches along the way to sit and enjoy the peaceful ambience.

Durham in general is a lovely city great for coach trips which I'm on but of you stay at jury's Inn beware they expect you in reception to pay for a packet of crisps using a card it say they accept card payments where possible NOT the truth that they only accept card payments they are lucky I do not put in a formal complaints but lovely hotel the room is super cool Durham is a great city but bring your own crisps

This place has something special about it that I can't quite put my finger on, and leaves you with a feeling of calm and peace that follows you for the rest of the day.
Walking along the river and being surrounded by nature, yet overlooked by the cathedral and city gives it a unique feeling of home and outdoors in a single walk.

A great way to see the town of Durham from a different perspective is to walk along the riverfront of the River Wear .
The views of the famous Durham Cathedral and Durham Castle are stunning but there's lots more to see ,the pretty bridges, old ruins and there's some really good pubs ,bars and restaurants to be found along the riverfront, on the river itself you will see lots of rowers ,I didn't realise it was so popular here, there's also lots of wildlife to be seen ,all in all its a great way to take in the sites of this beautiful town.

Hi,
If you’re staying in Durham itself in a hotel and have hotel car parking then you can start and finish at the hotel as the river wraps round Durham. If you’re staying in Durham and there’s no parking then the Park and Ride is probably the cheapest option. City centre the Walkergate car park has overnight parking if needed and is the best value I think.

We only walked about 30 minutes on one side and back on the other so an hour altogether at a leisurely pace starting from west of the castle near silver st bridge.
