On August 1, 2023 our Azamara cruise while visiting multiple Norwegian fjords, stopped in Vik. It was first stop where tenders were deployed to bring passengers on shore. We had plenty organized excursions prior to stopping for Vik I Sogn, so we used this stop for hiking and exploration of this small town and visiting couple historic Churches. It took about 30 minutes to reach the Hopperstad Stave Church, dated back to around 1130, and later continued walking to the new church which was built in 1877.
The entrance fee for the Hoppestad Stave Church was about $8 for seniors. Unfortunately, they ran out of English brochures and there were no other sources of information available at the site.
As a side general note, we were pleasantly surprised with availability of well marketed restrooms at lending for each port. There was also easily identifiable availability of WiFi.
Going back to the church visit. There was absolutely no availability of restrooms anywhere close enough and one should prepare yourself to hold one for the return back to the tender landing.

We left Balestrand early for our drive to Bergen, and it was an easy detour to see this well preserved stave church. Because we were there early, we had the church to ourselves. There was no tour or lecture on the church, so we learned about it from brochures and a book we had. We particularly enjoyed this stave church because we didn't encounter large tourist groups here compared to other such sites. It is an easy 30-60 stop.

Travelling from Flam to Balestrand, this stave church was recommended as a worthwhile place to visit. We are very glad we did. Coming from the UK, we had no previous knowledge of stave churches. Constructed entirely of wood, many, if not all of the staves were of the original 12th century wood. Ox blood was once used in the preservation of the external surface but we were pleased to see that they now use tar. Worth hanging around to hear the guide’s talk.

We walked about 20 minutes from the fyord ferry dock, passing through the village centre. Hopperstad is located in a rural setting. Beautifully preserved. We were moved to find engravings, intact chancel, and beautiful wooden interior. Highly recommend the 10 AM tour - the young man who conducted our early June tour was a gifted tour guide and was a fountain of knowlege. He knew every structural detail and the socio-political history of the local community. One of the best guides in all our travels. Check the website for tour schedule. A 1030 A D structure, amazingly preserved. 5 star experience. There are coffee shops in the village, pleasant outing. We also toured the cemetery surrounding this church, interesting.

We were visiting Vik because my Great Grandmother grew up here on a nearby farm in the 1850s. Special interest was to visit here and explore the grave markers to see if I recognized any names. However, there are two other churches in Vik and I do not know which one she or her relatives may have attended.

This church is very richly decorated and it would have been lost if not for the intervention of cultural conservationists, who managed to save it just in the nick of time. Hopperstad was built in 1130 and is, together with Urnes (which we also visited), the oldest stave church still in existence. There are only 28 or 29 stave churches left in the world, all are in Norway.

During its long life, Hopperstad Stave Church has both suffered periods of neglect and experienced a wonderful revival in the 1880s. With the exception of the nave and the chancel, most of the church's interior had been removed. In 1881, the architect Peter Andreas Blix offered his services free of charge. The stave church was restored using other churches as models.

You can get a tour of the inside for the small sum of 70 nok (about $8 USD). It is a beautiful architectural work.

Hopperstad Stave Church is one of the oldest -- older than the Borgund Stave Church. The architecture is wonderful and it has been well preserved. You can see the fjord in the distance as you look down on the town of Vik. Easy to access if you have a car and are driving through fjord country between Flam and Bergen. Small admission fee but worth it to see the interior.

With this church being one of the few that still exists on it’s original location, it is a special stop in Vik. There are 2 other churches within walking distance and a burial mound. It would probably be worth your while to get a guided tour in this area. We were on an organized tour so they had prearranged a guide for us.

It's impossible not to notice that a lot of Norwegian stave churches resemble the Borgund Stave Church. The reason behind it was that nobody knew how the original churches looked like. So they modeled them on the Borgund as it is one of the best preserved and considered to be the most authentic. This principle was employed during the restoration of the Hopperstad Stave Church in the late 19th century as demonstrated by the roof dragon heads, the tower, the steeple, etc. Yet its medieval character is so well-preserved that I would rank it a close second with the Borgund being the first. Its door carvings, dark interior with hole-window openings, carved painted canopy, graffiti dated back to the Middle Ages are just plain terrific. The guide seems to be on the premises at all times giving spontaneous presentations upon request.

As an added bonus the part of Rv 13 leading north from Rv 16 to the church is unbelievably picturesque. We had to stop numerous times at various spots as the views were absolutely breathtaking.

Coming down out of the hills to the valley with fjord beyond a simply lovely sight. A traditional stave church with added interest inside because of the painted baldacchino. Being specially interested in stave churches this was a welcome addition to our list.
