Very good service at a fair price

We travelled from Innsbruck to Salzburg and four days later Salzburg to Vienna. For both trips, the train was at the platform for some time before the departure time, so we were able to board the service and find our seats with no rush. Seat reservations are included in the price when booking online, so we booked seats close to the luggage area as we had holiday baggage with us. Ample storage space, with an optional returnable deposit system (so you can secure your luggage) which we did not need to use as we were able to watch over our belongings from our chosen seats. On arrival at the seat, scanning a code allows your check in to be verified, so when the ticket staff walk through, they are aware that you have the necessary tickets and the correct seats. A simple system, which saves time and effort. Toilet facilities are plentiful and were well maintained, and a drinks dispenser (coffee, tea, etc) was available at various points in the train. Seats were comfortable with plenty of leg room for tall people like me. The trains were clean and getting on/off was straightforward, even with trolley type luggage. A lot of the moans on TA about WESTbahn are from people who have got something wrong - bought tickets from the wrong station, tried to use another company's tickets on WESTbahn, etc., then complain about the company. Buy the correct ticket, save money compared with other operators, travel in comfort. We did.

Staff were really rude, couldn’t / would t explain ticketing and absolutely no help when their delays meant we missed out connections.

It’s the grestest regrets that I purchased the round trip train tickets from Vienna to Salzburg via Westbahn website. Despite its 1/3 cheaper but the starting train station is Wien WestBahn (9 Tram stops away from Wien Bahn) . I have booked a day tour in Salzburg meeting at 9 am. Therefore to be on time I need to take the first train and reached Salzburg at 8.30am. When I asked the Information counters, they mentioned i need to take tram to Wien Westbahn which is 9 stop away. Tram operating hours commenced at 6.30 am. So at that moment I knew I do not have time to travel all the way to Wien Westbahn.
The worst advice I get from Westbahn counter staff is to just board OBB train then chose to pay the upgrade fee.
Because I do not want to take the risks, I decided to purchased new tickets with OBB at Euro 64.20 departing 5:38 am.
Conclusion, do not buy train tickets from Westbahn because it’s cheaper n resulting like me I have to fill out additional money in total I pay Euro 100 for tickets to Salzburg

We had purchased online tickets to go from Berchtesgaden to Innsbruck only to find out that from Salzburg on the tickets were not valid anymore, when switching to Westbahn. Nowhere online was there anything about that, nor on the at the train station. When they came to check our tickets we had to repurchase all of the tickets again, paying more than triple than what we originally paid per person. After this happened I had to look online and sadly found many other reviews from other people having had the same sad experience. Westbahn, this is not a transparent way of running a business! When multiple clients complain about the same problem over the years and nothing changes it looks like poor client care. You lost some clients today!

Please note that tickets from our competitors are not valid on our trains. This is communicated as follows: 1) On all LCD boards on the outside of our trains 2) On all the screens inside our trains 3) By announcements outside on the platform 4) By announcements inside our trains It is exactly the same situation if you take a Thalys/Eurostar train from Amsterdam to Rotterdam with a ticket from train operator NS >> these tickets are not valid on these trains and you would have to buy a separate ticket. We hope to see you on board again soon.

Great affordable option to travel between different cities. We went from Vienna to Salzburg and then Salzburg to Munich. We tried First Class and Comfort Class. In my option, Comfort class is fine and First Class is not really much different! Great that it has an upper deck. Bring your own food as there isn’t much available on the train. Clean, comfortable and very easy to use!

My Experience with WB for the past three has gone increasingly from a relaxing and friendly to a quite tense and harsh, at some times even rude atmosphere and behaviour of staff. Trained to be rude and unpleasant seems to have become the new West-Bahn trademark! it is sad to witness the decline of good customer dealing and welcoming atmosphere at the West-Bahn they usually used to have in the past...seems a long time ago by now. Staff have become so unpleasant in their conduct and the way in dealing with customers, one can only assume staff must have been trained to be like that for whatever reason. Asking people to move from first class or seat or aisle in a manner one can only guess where this might be coming from...it seems they want to get rid of customers all together. They succeeded with me..once one goes with OEBB one immediately notices the difference in atmosphere and manners of staff. OEBB staff have a much better command of the language are well spoken, much friendlier, relaxed and most show a very good sense of humor and individuality. Avoid West Bahn, for me it has become a last option travel choice. Interesting note, due to some experiences getting the query about poor manners of WB staff round my working place, i received very similar feedback from others! One is really better of with choosing OEBB!

Aggressive and nasty staff that shouts at you when you ask a question instead of giving you information. I wrote in to complain and the response was just as unfriendly. Being horrible to paying customers seems to be their corporate culture. Truly terrible. Avoid.

We took tickets in first class. Brand new car. Upper deck. Very quiet and comfortable. I don’t regret the extra expense. The train was on time, no delay. Same for the return. It was a round trip Salzburg-Vienna.

My first time on Westbahn from Munich to Vienna, due to strikes in Germany.

Booked First Class. Clear verdict, not worth the money. Everyone is doing fine with Standard, no obvious advantage compared to the other classes and not what you would expect compared to OeBB or DB where First Class makes a difference in terms of comfort.

Layout is two floors. Luggage can only be stored downstairs or between chairs for medium sized suitcases. I personally would not like to store luggage completely out of sight. Overhead storage is not usable, to small even for cabine sizes luggage.

Toilets are quite far away and incurred waiting time, I felt there are not enough toilets. Medium dirty, as you would expect in a train with just enough toilets. In general I would say not the most comfortable trains, feels more bumpy than other rides.

No bistro but a snack vendor machine with a selection of sandwiches and some snacks. The machine was broken but the very attentive staff found a creative solution, so at least I got some potato chips.

As far as I know Westbahn uses a dynamic pricing system. So if you can land a good deal - go for it, don't pay up for first class, save the money for the (surprisingly) acceptable "Gemischte Satz".

Everything is broken: restrooms, coffee machines. Much worse experience than in previous years. The quality really deteriorated.
