Stunning church

The Jesuit Church in Linz was built in the second half of the seventeenth century, most probably under the architect Pietro Francesco Carlone's design, and was dedicated to St. Ignatius of Loyola, who founded the Jesuit Order. After dissolution of that Order by the Pope Clement XIII, and the rise of Linz to the rank of a diocese, that church became the cathedral of the said city. That's why it's also known by the name of the Old Linz Cathedral. It's a typically baroque temple. The façade is relatively simple. The portal is flanked by four columns and two pilasters – two and one respectively on each side - with composite capitals: corinthian and ionic. Above the portal, in a niche, on a small cornice supported by the mentioned columns, there is the statue of a saint. The façade comprises three bays. The stated portal finds itself on the central one, and on each side thereof already in the other bays there is a window arched in a semicircular curve. The other windows in the upper storeys have different shapes: rectangular and round as one levels up. The highest parts of the side bays are in fact the belfries of the church, each one topped by a bulbous dome. The façade is nice but not really eye-catching maybe on account of its greenish dull colour. The church interior, conversely to the exterior, is really spectacular. It's a single nave church with three side chapels on each side. The walls are apparently basically white with slightly grey ornate. The pilasters on the walls, between each one of the side chapels, have gilded capitals, The vault is somewhat barrel shaped but with bays clearly separated. The high altar is a masterpiece. It's the work of Giovanni Battista Barbarino and Giovanni Battista Colombo. It includes many marble statues, one of them representing St. Joseph. In the middle of the altarpiece, a beautiful painting depicting St. Aloysius by Antonio Bellucci can be admired. It's flanked by four pink marble round columns, two on each side, with white ionic capitals. Above it, over a typical baroque structure supported by the mentioned columns there is another painting depicting Christ with a cross in a decagonal frame. White marble statues of angles and saints are on both sides of the painting. The whole is really marvellous. The pulpit is a fabulous element of that church. It finds itself stuck on one of the pilasters, the last one on the left hand side of the nave before the chancel, looking at the high altar. It's a black wooden platform with gilded ornaments. The ciborium is in fact bigger than the platform itself and of a more complex manufacture. Some of the ornaments in that upper part of the pulpit are gilded statuettes located in little niches carved in the wood and one on the top of the ciborium representing the figure of Christ. It's a dazzling pulpit which deserves at least some minutes of contemplation. The stalls in the chancel are also a superb work of art. They are preciously carved wooden benches from the seventeenth century which absolutely contribute to the embellishment of the choir. Above those on the right hand side there is an impressive painting about the crucifixion. It's a breathtaking picture which captures the dramatism of the moment reflected in it. The baroque organ is also a jewel. It's a work by Franz Xaver Krismann from the eighteenth century. The organ remains nowadays as it was made, with just some adaptations carried out by Anton Bruckner, who used to play that instrument. The purpose of the alterations concerned was to make the instrument be adjusted to Bruckner sound ideas. The Linz old cathedral is therefore a highly interesting church housing real treasures in it by all means worth being observed. The visit of that temple is therefore strongly recommended.

Constructed by the Jesuits in 17th century, it was designated a cathedral when Josef II appointed a bishop for Linz. The Jesuits returned in 1909. Anton Bruckner, the composer, worked here as the cathedral organist from 1856–1868 and the organ here was built according to plans by Bruckner and has been preserved to this day.

It was built by the Jesuits and the cathedral until the new cathedral was completed. It is decorated in the baroque style. Beethoven wrote music for the cathedral, and Bruchner was an organist here. Beautiful altar and an elaborate pulpit. There is also a plague tower close by, called the Trinity Tower.

The church is somewhat less impressive than some from the exterior but the interior is stunning. Beautifully laid out, it was calming just to sit and enjoy the presence.

From my experiences in other baroque cathedrals I had expected to see lots of colorful paintings and frescoes in this Dom, but they just weren't there. There are many beautiful marble statues, but very little painting artwork. I would not revisit this cathedral.

Typical of many churches of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, this church is a good example of the sumptuous Baroque art. For those who do not enjoy Baroque it can be passed by, but it is a nice church.

Alter Dom is the largest church in Linz. The Baroque Cathedral was built in the 17th century. You can see the statue of St. Ignatius between its robust, towering towers. The carved pulpit and organ of the temple interior is a fantastic sight.
