Thoroughly enjoyed it - lots of see and photograph and, as many others have pointed out, the stained glass windows are glorious.

This cathedral is of immense size, claiming to be bigger than that in Vienna, though the spire is two metres shorter. Neogothic, started in later nineteenth century, its grey, cold interior is not inspiring, despite all the stained glass. It lacks the lightness of touch that is the mark of real gothic, and is ponderous. Some of the statutes are terrible, such as that of St Paul which reminded us of the sort of figurines used by gamers.

We hated the cathedral from the outside. The construction scaffolding is unfortunate, but has to be accepted. The three huge electronic signs on the other hand are extremely unsightly. The interior is amazing, very dark in some places, with rows of tall, incredibly detailed and beautiful stained glass windows. We were fortunate to witness a spontaneous concert by a visiting choir that created an unforgettable memory.

When I visited the cathedral, some work were going on at the exterior, so I could not see its beauty from outside. But I could admire it from inside, especially the stained glasses. Later I read that this church can accommodate up to 20,000 people. It is somehow hard to believe it is so big.

St. Mary's Cathedral in Lynz is an imposing church in neogothic style. Its construction started in the early second half of the nineteenth century under the Cologne architect Vinzenz Statz's design. It lasted for a long time, its completion having been in 1924, albeit one had to wait until 1996 for having the whole of the stained glass windows placed. The placing thereof having been done actually in different epochs.
The view of that Cathedral is really amazing, both the exterior and the interior; not in vain it's the largest religious building in Austria. The outer part of the edifice has the typical gothic churches appearance. The façade is an elaborate combination of pointed-arch stained glass windows and a fantanstic entrance as well as a marvellous rose window, apart from the belfry tower. This is square shaped up to the belfry itself, which is octagonal. Then the steeple has the form of a pyramid. Another tower on the back of the temple has a completely different design, though it's also a beautiful element. Above the main portal there is a wonderful fresco by Andreas Strickner depicting the Holy Trinity above, and below it the creation of the first people and the Last Judgement. Likewise, the large stone sculptures of St. Peter and St. Paul respectively at each side of the entrance as well as those of the four evangelists by Franz Forster are remarkable.
Upon entering the Cathedral one can be dumbfounded by the grandiosity of the lieu. It's a three-nave church, the central nave being approximately twice as high and as large as the side aisles. They are separated from each other by cylindrical columns, with ornate foliage capitals, resting upon massive octagonal bases formed by two concentric segments, that one below being larger than the other one. The ceiling consists in an attractive ribbed vault
In the middle of the crossing there is a modern cubic altar placed on a platform. It was made in the tens of the present century by Heino Zobering and Wilfred Kuehn. On a smaller platform nearer the high altar there is a lectern in the same style as the aforesaid altar with the book support surface slightly slopping. They are both solid and made of Jurassic limestone. The altar is flanked by six long and thin candlesticks. In addition, behind the lectern there are two seats arranged symmetrically to the main axis, one for the bishop and the other one for a priest, also made partly of the same material as the lectern. These four items are nice from an aesthetic viewpoint, and despite the style difference betwixt them and the church general appearance, they don't clash with the rest of the church interior.
The high altar is spectacular. The gilded cross in the middle of it by the sculptor Josef Gasser is really stunning. It includes a cross which is in itself an artwork. It's decorated with floral motifs and at its four ends the evangelists' symbols are shown. The cross finds itself under a canopy which is an excellent work resting on four marble columns. Inside the canopy one can observe several beautiful reliefs representing twelve elders with their incense bowls around, and also, in the middle of the canopy, the figure of a lamb with the victory flag. In the gables of the canopy there are paintings depicting Mary in specific situations, such as she as a gift to her parents, or encountering Jesus on the way to the cross.
The space in front of the high altar is amazing. In order to accede to it one must go up four black steps. The floor of that space is a marble inlay. Two large black fields in front of two columns are striking.
The pulpit – though not very large – is a nice element of the church. It's a wooden work dating back to the beginning of the twentieth century, in which the four evangelists are depicted in relief images. Jesus as a good shepherd can likewise be seen there represented.
In the Cathedral one may contemplate marvellous paintings. For example, that on the Sacred Heart of Jesus altar, painted by Rudolf Bacher on mahogany, shows several aspects about Christ conveyed in liturgy and piety. In the main section thereof Christ appears as an intermediary between God and men. He appears dressed in a long white robe with two red stripes. In this picture he looks like a priest. At Christ's feet one can see six personages from the Ancient and the New Testaments, to wit, Paul, Adam and Eve, Thomas, Mary Magdalene and King David. Below the described section, on the left of a shrine housing a cross, a mosaic shows Jesus weeping over Jerusalem; and the mosaic on the right shows the denial of Jesus by Peter. On each side of the mentioned main section a statue of a saint (Rupert and Wolfgang, respectively) is of a perfect manufacture. At the right transept, the Sacred Heart of the Virgin Mary altar is also of much interest. The altarpiece is indeed beautiful. It contains a painting representing the Virgin of Mercy. In the center of the picture, Mary with a crown and a golden heart is depicted. Above her one can see the images of Christ with his heart and two angels with a cross and a tiara. Below that painting, four mosaic pictures depict scenes from the Gospel in which Mary plays a relevant role. On each side of the main painting there are statues of St. Altmann and St. Valentin respectively. The whole is of a stunning beauty.
In that temple there are three organs: the Rudiger organ, which bears the name of the bishop who consecrated the church in 1869, the choir organ and the old cathedral organ, built in the eighties of the nineteenth century. An outstanding feature of the first mentioned one are the Spanish trumpets that protrude horizontally into space.
The oldest part of the Cathedral and likewise that which deserves the most careful observation of the different items there included is the ambulatory. It comprehends six small chapels, with one altar each, and the votive chapel with a main altar and two side altars. Every one of those chapels is a jewel, but the votive chapel is particularly dazzling. The free standing high altar, made of white marble, is in itself a filigree work. The statue of the Virgin under a sandstone canopy is a marvel. Mary is surrounded by angels, and she has the right foot on the head of a snake. Around the altar there is a freeze made of twenty four mosaic pictures. Those on the left show patriarchs and prophets from the Old Testament. The two side altars in that votive chapel are dedicated to Mary's parents. They are also wonderful art works. Certain aspects of the Queen of the Prophets altar on the right hand side of the ambulatory ought to be outlined. The statue of John the Baptist holding a lamb is very nice. In the same chapel there is the octagonal shaped font, which is also eye catching. The reliefs on its lid show the baptism of Jesus by John in the River Jordan. On the other hand, the reliefs on the main section of the font are fantastic, and especially those of the base column call for the neogothic architecture.
The stained glass windows are very elaborate, particularly those in the nave. The scenes there depicted are very unblurred and detailed. The first one on the right shows the lying of the foundation stone of the Cathedral. In it one can see, among other people, the bishop of Linz, Franz Joseph Rudiger, two other bishops and the architect Vinzenz Statz with a mason hammer in his hand.
The Linz Cathedral is therefore an splendid building housing fabulous artistic treasures, whose visit cannot be missed while in the stated charming city.

Every window has stained glass in them, so it was rather dark in there. Plain glass helps bring unfiltered light into the building. The most famous window is the Linz Window, which depicts the history of Linz. It is the largest cathedral in Austria, but is two meters shorter than the Vienna Cathedral, since no cathedral is allowed to be taller than the Vienna Cathedral.

This new cathedral is the largest church in Austria (not the tallest), it is able to seat 20,000. I especially enjoyed the stained glass window that portrays the history of Linz.

This is an inspirational building from the outside but the inside is another world.

A vast predominately oblong building with so many stained windows. We had a tour guide so we got the story depicted on each window. From the outside you are unaware of the windows other then they are windows but once inside!

There is plenty more to see as well as windows. Light a candle for that missing loved one, meditate, but don't leave Linz without visiting here.
