The Museum is haused in the renaissance style Linz Castle located at a level above the city and the River Danube. In fact, the view one can enjoy over that river and the city section on the other bank thereof is fabulous. The building concerned is really impressive. The fact that its South wing was rebuilt in a modern style makes the edifice still more interesting on the basis of the amazing combination of ancient and modern architecture. The stated combination is very subtle yet attractive and calls for the future oriented perspective of that marvellous Austrian city. The Schloßmuseum in Linz is the largest universal museum in Austria. The items there exhibited offer a comprehensive insight into the natural, cultural and art history of the Upper Austria from prehistory to the present century. Especially interesting are the collections of Gothic art and paintings from the nineteenth century. In relation to Gothic, for instances, in that Museum one can find samples of the altar structure which proliferated from the beginning of the sixteenth century as a consequence of the new religious institutions which were founded at that time, In this respect, on can admire in the Museum a wing altar from Pulgarn. The high altar from St. Leonhard bei Freistadt shows some elements of the Danube style dating back to the beginning of the sixteenth century. The objects from the popular culture of Upper Austria exhibited in that Museum are fascinating. Among them one can observe the most varied types of objects, such as traditional costumes and hats typical of the province in question. A large display of wonderful furniture, musical instruments and items which were part of the daily life in the early and middle twentieth century, such as vehicles, radio and TV sets, sewing machines, cameras and others can be there admired. Among the paintings exhibited in that Museum there are true jewels. In this regard, one could cite, for instance, “The Night” by Joachim von Sandrart; “The Virgin with Saints and Donors” from 1490, and “Girl with a ball” by Johann Baptist Reitter, ca. 1865. There are likewise gorgeous gothic sculptures: among others, “The Virgin on a Throne”, a “Pietà” (Marienklage); “St. Florian”. It's worth observing attentively also a peculiar representation of St. Josep with the Child in baroque style. On the other hand, stopping over the permanent exhibition down the basements is an excellent way to explore the roots of Upper Austria from the prehistory to the Ancient and Middle Ages. The visit to that Museum is therefore by all means very recommendable. Both the building with its mixture of historical and modern architecture and the masterpieces housed in it are really stunning.

We did not have time to see the museum, however we did enjoy the large 3D model of the city near the entrance, that displays buildings from few hundred years back. It is possible to walk through the restaurant to a little narrow viewing terrace and enjoy a terrific panorama of the Danube and the city.

Good museum and reasonably priced. The museum police / helpers are just too officious and in your face. They follow you around the galleries and make you feel like you shouldn’t be there. This isn’t how a modern family friendly museum should be. We left early as we felt like we were in the way.

Museums should be encouraging children to look at things and experience history. Do not touch signs are clearly displayed and this is sufficient. Museum assistants should be there to help, not to patrol. Such a shame as this is a great museum.

This a short, but not necessarily easy walk from the Hauptplatz. Lots of great views out over the old town and the Danube. There is a museum and a lovely outdoor cafe to enjoy after the climb.

The museum has a section devoted to technology, as well as to nature, and a decent exhibition on late medieval art from the upper Danube region as well. It is not the largest museum in these lands, but worth seeing if you like museums.

We got stalked.. by an employee here! We were visiting and just walking around when a woman with half long dark blond hair and a silver cape, walkietalkie and a green shirt (no joke) kept following us througout the visit. We felt very uncomfortable. A lot of the stuff was closed as well. I dont recommend it, unless youre into that stuff.

The exhibits were put together is a somewhat disorganised fashion, but the explanations about what there was to see were excellent. Told a really good story.

We visited this interesting museum. Lots of rooms, different topics but above all a cross-section of life here in Austria. A small hidden treasure. Otherwise Linz offers very little.

This museum has something for everyone. There are displays of folk art, cultural artifacts, religious art from the middle ages and Austrian paintings. The displays are excellent. The only thing lacking is English- language descriptions. It is well worth the time to see this museum.

Located in a former Imperial Castle dating back to the late eighth century, the museum opened in the sixties and has an extensive collection displayed in over thirty five rooms.

The museum has a very diverse collection with exhibits ranging from arts and crafts, coins, nature, technology, music, archaeology, culture and history. The museum is so large that sometimes you need guidance from the friendly and helpful staff to find some of the exhibits.

It is one of the best museums in Linz and definitely worth a visit. Budget at least half a day to see it fully and enjoy its many exhibits.
