I have been hundred of museums all over the world and I was thinking there would this be the best of them? Excellent staff, modern architecture, lovely multimedia (with a hint of English humor) and of course H.C. Andersens' lovely literature and art made a must place in Odense. Go!

Thank you for your kind review !
We are so pleased to hear about your experience - and will be sure to inform staff that you enjoyed the visit - and the English humor ;)
We hope many more will follow your advice to come by - we really must agree that it is a must-see(and hear).
Best,

Odense is a great escape from Copenhagen to give you a different view of Danish city culture. The birthplace itself is connected to the outstanding renovated museum, which is a must visit.

The small yellow house is located at the corner of Hans Jensens Straede and Bangs Boder streets. Next to the house is now a museum of HC Andersen that is still under construction. The area is not accessible for cars. We parked at the garage under the Casino, not far from the site self. Strolling around the area passing the narrow streets with rows of colored small houses was magical, like a fairytale

Our experience at the museum was fantastic. Multimedia worked great, it was interactive and very informative and interesting. Incredible imagination used in every display . Loved the area of many of his fairytales. It is worth a visit and included in the ticket is also admission to other attractions in town for the same day, so visit the museum early.

The exhibition parts are there but most of the multimedia is missing. The museum itself has a nice setup and when everything is done it will be a nice experience but not now. As an english speaking visitor much of the information is lost. Good idea and a nice place but more content and multimedia is needed

We visited Odense to see Hans Christian Andersen's birth place. He was known for his fairytails: The Emperor's new cloths, Little mermaid, The princess and the pea, Thumbelina, The little match girl, The snow queen etc etc. We have read these tales when our children were small. HC Andersen's fairy tales were translated into 125 languages.
We visited HC Andersen's childhood residence and the museum. His father was a cobbler and mother (house wife) was very poor. They worked so hard to raise their son's future. I became so sad to see his mother's tiny little kitchen! Parents always encouraged HC Andersen what he wanted to do in his life, something his parents just can dream of. Such a marvelous sacrifice they did for their son.
HC Andersen wrote books, traveled a lot in Europe, read books to small children, cut paper art. He never got married. HC Andersen is an iconic Danish writer who made Odense and Denmark known to the whole world. Danish people took care of their cultural heritage. People visit to Odense from whole world because of HC Andersen.
Spend time to read the story of him at the museum and his residence. Everyone were obsessed to the mirror which showed any person as an Emperor (modern technology). Great fun for children and adults. In every person lives an "Emperor", a remarkable illustration. Absolutely a must if you are in Odense. Suitable for children, adults in any age. Reasonable entrance fee.
Do not entertain sorrow or give it a chance to remain with you throughout your life, an excellent advice from HC Andersn. Thank you!

Wait a year before visiting
Very disappointing and not worth the entrance fee
They are still waiting for microchips for the audiosystem (promised for february 2022) so no interactive museum yet.
Not worth the visit YET for english speaking tourist.
They should have waited another year before opening the museum

Huge disappointment. I was expecting an exhibition almost finished, but with few parts not working. It was the reverse experience. The museum's objects were there and illuminated, but the whole technical side that should lift the experience to a new and better level did not work. The garden was inaccessible and not just unfinished as the website gives the impression of. We received a small compensation in the form of a discount code for 50% when the museum finally opens. We will probably come again at that time, and can give a new assessment. But for now, we all agreed that it was too unfinished for guests to enter.

The house is very small and anticlimactic. I would recommend going if you purchase the whole H.C. Andersen experience (including the museum and other sites), but I don't think that it is worth a special journey. The area around the house is very cute for a stroll though.

We only had 1 1/2 hrs to see as much as we could. Tickets are purchased in the H. C. Andersen museum which is a great place to start. Here one can read and see displays about his early childhood, inspiration, friends and adult life. After the museum, one can also see his childhood home and further on the house he was born in. These two homes show the impoverished circumstances he was born, despite which he developed his artistic abilities and an active imagination. We appreciated what we saw.

Is this museum open or not. I read a traveller review from February 2018 however the next reviewer states it is closed until 2020.

The little yellow house is still open! The old Hans Christian Andersen Museum is closed due to renovation, but a Andersen museum has opened in its place very close by (2 min away) - at Claus Bergs Gade 11, 5000 Odense C. Opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm. I realise this reply is late, but might help others :)

We took a detour to view the museum and surprisingly it was closed for hours (without notice). We were two of about 15 tourists who also came by to visit the museum in the few minutes we were there and all were disappointed and surprised by its closure. Adjacent streets were torn up last year, so one had to park and walk a distance, only to be met by closed doors.
