Well worth going to see, everything is so well laid out and full of interesting history boards at important parts of the trail. I really loved stepping back into history and geting a chance to see how everything was back then. If your only in Sparti for the day please add this to your list of things to see. You will not regret it.

There is not much to see here: they are presently restoring the theatre, but for the rest there are minimal signs of what once was something great.

Sparta was a significant city state in Ancient Greece, often at war with Athens to determine control of the Peloponnese. Unlike Athens, however, what you’ll find in Sparta today is a relatively modern city from the 19th century, built on a grid pattern with limited evidence of its famous past. However, some remains of the ancient city have survived – you’ll find them by turning left at the statue of Leonidas and following a road past what looks like a school. The site is quite extensive, and free to enter, and there are some interpretation panels to help you along the way. You’ll also see the remains of a Roman theatre down to the right as you work your way around, but there was no access that we could find.

Visited with low expectations, and even these weren’t met. I had read about it, looked at photographs, and thought maybe not worth the visit. But it’s Sparta, a name famous in history, surely worth a look? No, not really. No entry fee and no one there. Followed the signs. What was about looked restored or supported by concrete. Surely the reputed large theatre would be good? No. Undergoing restoration not a lot has been done. Or looks to being done given the abandoned machinery and pipes on the monument. Not worth the short diversion we took. Thankfully we visited many wonderful locations prior to this, Delphi, Messene, Mystras………….

Interesting to see the famous Spartan city. There was good signage of the layout and explanations. I was sad that not more is known about dome things (such as the purpose of thd circular building), but prefer honest speculation to pretend knowledge. Well laid out and beautiful views.

This is a very interesting archaeological site. The ruins are scattered in an olive grove. There are ruins of the acropolis, ancient thatre, ancient buildings, a cathedral, etc. A very nice place to feel the touch of ancient history. Free entrance. I highly recommend it!

We came in to see the ancient ruins on a weekday around 3 pm and the site was closed even though the closing time should be 4. Nice job. I managed to take a few pictures thru the fence but the entire experience was disappointing.

My wife is fascinated by Ancient Spartan history, so this site was a must-visit. It definitely met our expectations and the price of admission (FREE!) was perfect. Loved seeing the Acropolis and Agora as well as the old temple site, but being able to walk through and climb on the Ancient Greek/Roman Theater was definitely the highlight!

Although you could say it's not much to see, comparing to Mystras, le's not remember it's history: it is dated around 2000 years BC. It is still impressive to think Leonidas walked the same streets we roam now.

The place is breathtaking, thinking that you walk and sit in the same place as figures like Leonidas, Pafsanias and Nikias.
This is the place of heroes that defended the west, and ensured the development of the western civilization.

Note: Keep in mind that most of what you will see is roman restorations.

What is astonishing is the level of abandonment from the Greek authorities.

There should be organization here similar to the Colosseum, the Athens Parthenon, or the pyramids.

In the contrary, it appears that the state has no respect for the heritage they have, or the people who visit.

At 11 AM, not a single guard, not a single guide, not a single person in sight.

And of course they keep the bathrooms locked for when and if they show up.

Such an amazing location which should be one of the centres of the world is treated like a 3rd grade vilage walkabout.
