The exhibit focuses on the excavated treasure in the ancient city state of Samos. Nothing really outstanding. But the air conditioning is a true blessing during the mid-day sun.

Firstly and most importantly the location of this museum is wrong on the map. It’s actually next to the town hall, which shows as being the wine museum which is actually another 1.5 kms away! However, once located its a very well presented collection of artefacts from the island covering a long period of ancient history.

The result of a private foundation, this gem of a museum is located about 5 kilometers from Pythagorion. It contains a good collection of fossils not only found on Samos island but also from other areas of the Aegean. These fossils were known to the ancients who connected them to their myths, as, for example, Plutarch (priest of Apollo at Delphi writing in the second century AD) who associates some of these remains with the Amazons. Of particular note is the collection of the remains of small sized horses called Hipparia, a critter called the Samotherio, and the remains of rhinoceroses. The geological history of Samos which resulted in these species inhabiting the island is informative. There are also collections of sea shells, of birds and beasts native to the island of Samos, of rocks and minerals, and a kind of herbarium with plants of the region. Do not miss the fabled Kaplani, a type of big cat which allegedly swam to Samos from neighboring Turkey and terrorized the villagers, the story of which has been immortalized by Alki Zei's work, The Kaplani in the Window. There is also a small ethnographic collection of native Samian costumes and historical memorabilia on the second floor. Everything is neatly and spaciously arranged and labeled in Greek and English. One can purchase a small but succinct guide book with color illustrations (euro 5).
