The oldest Oracle site in Greece(older than Dephi), was almost completely empty of people. Definitely worth a stop

Beautiful area and not too big to walk around with kids even. Only I was hoping the introduction would be a bit better on the maps and info boards, as my Greek is still very bad.

It is one of those places where you feel the weight of time, history and mythology and you enjoy for a brief moment being part of it. Well organized, beautiful remains, impressive location. A place to remember.

The entree fee is now 8 euro pp, which I hope they will use to improve the visit (better signs, better explanations, ...). The walk in this sanctuary takes about 45 minutes. Nice big theater (currently partly under construction), lots of ruins of temples (a drawing of what they looked like would have been nice) . Lots of excavations going on. Claims to be older than the Delphi Oracle. If you have visited the archeological museum in Ioannina it makes mare sense.

€7 entry which is quite expensive for essentially one structure, the theatre. Yes, there are the remains of temples dated 3rd C BC and more recent religious buildings but nothing amounting too a metre or so high except the walls at either end of what would have been the stage area. So the theatre is the main attraction. That is quite impressive, if undergoing renovation, so there is modern equipment evident as well as a big working compound. There is also a stadium but this is currently more no more than the flat grass area with grass embankments on either side. The frequent taping off of areas where you cannot walk is also irritating.

We stopped here on our drive from Arta to Ioannina. After paying 4 euro for each senior, we followed the easy walkway passing the Stadium to the 3rd C BC Theater, then passing the Public Buildings to the Temple of Zeus. It was built in the 4th C BC. to surround the prophetic oak tree where people believed that the god resided in the roots.
This site grew into a major Hellinistic sanctuary then enhanced by the Romans for games/sporting events until abandoned in the Christain 4th C.
Parking is easy in front, plenty of English sign posts throughout and access permitted in the theater as it is under active renovation.

The much-less-visited sanctuary of Dodoni is as fascinating as the crowded one at Delphi--and it dates back even farther than Apollo's more-famous oracle. The setting is gorgeous, the theatre impressive, and the Sacred House of Zeus and the Mother Goddess Dione strangely moving--with its sacred oak (no doubt a descendent of the original) in the centre. If you listen to the rustle of the leaves, you may go away a little wiser. You'll also be accompanied on your rounds through the grove by a number of spirit guides, both feline and canine.

One could review the site here, the landscaping and infrastructure (fine); the 18,000-seat ancient theater (wow); the current renovations (loud and cordoned off, but when should they do this?), but I will focus on the main point, I think:

THE HOLY OAK TREE

This is the oldest oracle in Greece, the only non-Apollon one (and thus pre-Apollon), so old that it was ancient already for Homer. It is of major significance for Western and indeed global civilization. Destroyed 1500 years ago and rediscovered around 1850, it is in ruins, but the ruins are solid enough to envision how this was. (If you're interested in the tradition, v. Warsberg's Eine Wallfahrt nach Dodona is fantastic if you read German, and a 2016 essay by Robert Parker in Greece & Rome gives good academic background.)

Now, this is an oak tree through which the divine spoke, as mitigated by priestesses - these are gone, but the very impressive oak is there (again), and, well, you can ask what you what to know. Dodona has always answered very concrete, even mundane questions (business, marriage), so you should arrive with one, then ask, and listen to the rustling of the leaves - and if you get an answer, let that be told to you. The courtyard with the tree is roped off, but there are several stone platforms and other options where to position yourself, and it is generally quiet enough that this is an option.

Too esoteric for you? Maybe so, but in 2021 we might just give higher credit again to an oak tree, let alone one in such a setting with millenia of devotion around it, than recently. Oak tree track recods might just be better than those of other forms of information and knowledge about the future, or career advice, and so you just might consider whether you shouldn't ask...

The site is quite large, so it takes time to see everything. We were hoping to get a bit better information, but the English explanations were not so informative as we hoped. But still, I'd say this historical site is one of the best we saw during our trip in Epirus.
