We had gone there especially, on a day’s port call from a cruise ship, as on a previous visit to Heraklion we had seen most of the major (excellent) sites and this looked very interesting. All information we could find (it does not seem to have its own website) told us that it was open from 10 am on Sundays. It wasn’t. No information posted outside.

The Church of St. Catherine of Sinai is in the same square of the Cathedral of St. Minas, and it was built in 1555. Iht was the site of a renowned school of painters and writers during the 16th and 17th century.

The church was converted to a museum hosting Christian Art developed in Crete from the 14th to the 19th century: although the museum is not big, here you can see beautiful icons, murals, stone sculptures, wood carving, miniatures, devotional objects, vestments, embroidery, manuscripts and books.

Important icons by Angelos Akontatos (early 15th century) and Michael Damaskinos (16th century) can be seen here.

A nice quant museum located in a former church/mosque (during Ottoman occupation) with lots of beautiful icons and religious items. It's located next to the cathedral and -to my opinion- shows a more realistic impression of the people of the bible as in most icons show a different etnicity, more authentic than the western ones, aka Jesus and others are middle eastern/ black. No blue eyed Jesus here. Although you can see the change when the Venetians took over. This also reflects how polarized the cultural identity debat is as normally I probably wouldnt even have noticed. Very nice museum and even though it's small it's not to be missed.

We visited twice. The first time we stopped, a service was taking place so we returned about 90 minutes later. It is small, but interesting.

Friday 28th August we were sightseeing and exploring in Heraklion, we visited the small pedestrianised Saint Catherine's Square in the centre of the City.

The Museum is located in the Square and is housed in the former 13th-century Monastery of Saint Catherine (Agia Ekaterini) after which the Square has been named.

We did not enter the Museum but was intrigued by the history of the building.

Originally it was a Monastery until 1669, when it became a Mosque, the Zulfjakar Ali Mosque. It remained as a Mosque until 1922

In 1967 it became a Museum  housing historic religious artworks, woodcraft, manuscripts and stone carvings from monasteries around Crete.

Every year, on 25 November a service is held in the church to celebrate the feast of St Catherine.

This is a small jewel if you like religious art. Heraklion was a center of hagiography during the Venetian kai Ottoman eras. Everyone has heard of El Greco, but here you will discover Michael Damascene, a master who lived in both Venice and Crete, as well as other important artists

The church, near St Minas Cathedral, was dedicated to St Catherine by the Venetians. During the Turkish occupation of Crete it was converted to a mosque. It now holds the Museum of Christian Art - mainly a collection of very fine icons.

This is a Church and Icon Museum not too far from St Minas Cathedral. The building itself is also interesting, having been converted to / from a mosque over time. Worth a look if you're nearby during your travels in the area.

The museum om Christian art in Heraklion is a little gem. The church in this museum is placed is a very beautiful building and gives you a religious experience. And the collection of icons is very impressive. They are all very interesting and beautiful. The context they are made which is described gives you a lot more than just to look at them. It is not a museum that takes a lot of time but sticks in your memory of as a light and happy experience. It can be highly recommended.
