We were about 20 minutes early for the Syntagma Square Changing of the Guard. Besides the 2 guards dressed in their hot looking uniforms, there was a 3rd soldier who was dressed in a different uniform who walked back and forth wiping their brows from the heat and making sure they were okay. When the top of the hour came, a procession walked into the square and the guards changed with others. Their slipper like shoes with metal cleats on the bottom made the wait worth while. This happens every hour on the hour, 24/7.

Though not necessarily at the TOP of "things to see / do in Athens" I would say that IF you happen to be strolling by Parliment located at the top of Syntagma Square at a given "HOUR" run over to view the Changing of the Guards. It is quite an entertaining, though brief, ceremony. The hourly ceremony takes place at the Presidential Mansion and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and commences in what I'd consider "slow motion" as new sentry replace the old, with high stepping pomp and much circumstance. Dressed in ceremonial garb from head to toe make no mistake: these are extremely disciplined soldiers who stand steadfast for 1 hour no matter what the weather may bring: Rain or HEAT! We once caught this ceremony at night which is when I'd recommend it for two reasons: Less people to contend with and if you're photographing the event, the shadows of the sentry against the Tomb make for a beautiful photo.

Pretty interesting. They wear traditional Greek uniforms. Get there early and middle area to get the best look. They do the change on the hour, every hour with a special one on Sunday

We went at before half past the hour and stays beyond the hour and were rather disappointed.
Contrary to the photo on this listing, what we saw was two soldiers marching in a ceremonial way to exchange their places at two guard posts, that was it.

Luckily, we had that bit of time to spare but would have been annoyed if we went out of our way to see this!

We went to the parade on Sunday - get there early as very busy . I stood on corner of road righting side facing Syntagma Square - so you can see the marching band and soldiers .

We made the mistake of appearing at the bottom of the hour. The ceremony at the top of the hour is a lot more interesting and formal. There is a lot of slow motion posing and stepping to an unheard rhythm. I would suggest going for the spectacle.

PROS
* Special colorful military parade event that happens every hour
* Unique colorful special traditional uniforms
* Traditional military marches and coordination
* Special spectacle event that represents Greek history and traditions
* Accompanied by a marching band (at least on Sundays at 11am)

CONS
* It can be crowded, especially Sunday 11am
* Sometimes difficult to see
* Police require spectators to be a good distance away from these Evzone guards

"I VISITED THIS PLACE"...
...because it was one of the two things that i intended to do during my long weekend in Athens (I had already visited the Acropolis- see my "helpful" 👍 review and many photos 📷). I remembered that my parents had been at this in 1983, and now, I wanted to see it for myself.

As per advice on tripadvisor forum, I was sure that we arrived at least half an hour early- actually 40 minutes. There wasn't much to do except stand there. At twenty minutes to the hour, the police took us back way across the street. I was still able to secure a very good view at curbside. My daughter was bored just standing there, so she went shopping in Syntagma Square, but returned in time to see the event.

The marching band arrived from the left side of the Hellenic Parliament building at 10:50 and paraded in front of us. The high stepping precision team Evzone guards followed behind marching onto the street. They entered the plaza of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and did their ritual. Afterwards, an officer in more standard army green uniform inspected and instructed the Evzone soldiers as they stood near their guard boxes.

I enjoyed the sho-wmore than my daughter did. She send live video to her brother, who immediately commented, Dad loves this kind of stuff."

WAS IT WORTH THE COST?
Yes and it was free

WOULD "I VISIT THIS PLACE" AGAIN?
Yes for sure

ADVICE
* Get there early- at least 20-30 minutes, especially for Sunday at 11am
* Stand to the left as you face the Parliament building or across the street. Otherwise, you will be moved eventually by the police, and before the ceremony begins.

I was lucky to be in the neighborhood so I waited 15 mn, I was in first line, it gets pretty crowded when it starts. It is interesting to see that they still follow some traditions. And it is also free, which is nice for a change
