I love modern and contemporary art and visit the MOMAs in NYC as often as possible. I’ve traveled to over 130 countries and visited MOMAs in as many as I could find. I travel to photograph street art as well.

I’m here to save you some money and time. I don’t know what’s been here in the past, but this place is quite awful. First of all there doesn’t seem to be a permanent collection, so nothing to fall back on if the traveling collections don’t suit your taste.

At the moment there is one exhibit about architecture that mainly features blueprints.

There is one exhibit about paint on cloth (Don’t think oil on canvas. Rather think that messy painting smock you were wearing the last time you painted your livingroom).

The third is maybe 1000 black and white photos of people in South Asia.

There are huge rooms that have one poster on the wall or one exhibit in the center—and nothing else.

This is a disgraceful waste of space and 13€.

Do not waste your money.
Paid €40 for a very disappointing visit. We have been to galleries all over europe and they have been marvellous.
The reception/ ticket seller did not explain that the only exhibition was on architecture. As they have no other exhibits they should only charge for the garden & tiny Miro/Calder exhibition in the park. I wish i had read a review before going. Most disappointing gallery ever. 😑 0 stars

Lots of different experiences here, from art to architecture to an outdoor tree walk. The grounds are lovely. The exhibits are contemporary and will only be some people's favorite but well worth exploring.

We decided to just visit the park and not the museum, so I can't comment on the indoor displays, but we did enjoy the gardens. They are large, and undulating, but much is in the shade which was great for a very hot day. There is a rather charming grotto built around a pond with a huge number of frogs in it, some croaking noisily. The farm was peaceful and we enjoyed spotting egrets there. Some of the gardens are rather neglected, but there are signs to say that they are being rejuvenated - it must be a difficult job on very dry soil. There were some excellent information boards which gave the history of the place and were worth reading. We were disappointed that the tea garden was closed, as we were unsure that we could access the restaurant - there was nothing at the entrance or on the website that we could see to explain this. Ticketing could be far better explained - it's not clear what you are getting for your money, although to be fair I heard the counter assistants trying to help. Unfortunately that makes for longer queues than are necessary.

Be aware that there are major roadworks going on in the area to improve the transport system - it will be good when they are finished, but we had decided to walk up from the Metro and it made the walk dusty and tedious.

A lovely peaceful park with a great rooftop restaurant and interesting art. We visited on our way to the airport. The cost was 20€ for the park and museum (which is really an art gallery). There is a cloakroom where you can leave your bags/luggage for free. You could pay 10€ for just the gardens and still access the cloakroom and restaurant. The gardens took 90 mins to stroll around, on good shady paths. There is a small wooden raised tree walk which was fun, beautiful formal gardens as seen in the publicity photos, and occasional art work dotted around to give more interest. Don’t miss going into the pink house or the grey box like building which houses an interesting 10 min light/digital show. We ate in the rooftop restaurant 17€ for a lovely 3 course buffet, soup, salads, hot buffet and deserts/fresh fruit. 10€taxi to the airport from there. Perfect end to a lovely weekend in Porto.

Contemporary art often leaves me scratching my head, and while I wasn't convinced at first by the first exhibition we saw here during our visit in September 2023 - Allora & Calzadilla's 'Entelechy' - it soon grew on me, particularly once I started investigating the pieces in closer detail. The centrepiece and highlight of the collection is the one that gives it its name: the monumental coal sculpture cast from a tree felled by lightning. The thousands of hand-painted recycled polyvinyl flowers are also impressive when you know that's what they are.

More eclectic, and all the more impressive for it, is Carla Filipe's 'In My Own Language I Am Independente'. This collection has so much to offer in so many different genres, materials and formats. Much of it warrants lingering investigation to appreciate the wit, intelligence and layers of meaning. The exhibition as a whole brims with inventiveness and the voice of an artist who really has something - indeed many things - to say.

Outside of the museum, the grounds are dotted with sculptures, and the villa of the Serralves Foundation is currently home to a joint exhibition of works by Alexander Calder and Joan Miró. But the grounds themselves are the attraction here, verdant and diverse, including a treetop walk, a delightful pond, a rose garden, a small farm and more. We wandered here for a good two hours, enjoying the greenery and the weather and marvelling at some of the plants we came across.

As far as downsides are concerned, the cost of simply getting to the museum and back from the city centre (€15-20 by Bolt, for example; cheaper but much longer travelling time by bus) added to the €20 ticket cost makes visiting a somewhat pricey undertaking. If you're on the fence about contemporary art in the first place and parks/gardens aren't really your thing, it probably won't be worth the money. Also, service was a little unfriendly in the café, and parts of the grounds (the herb garden in particular) were 'under maintenance', for which read 'unkempt'.

Those niggles aside, we really enjoyed our time at the museum and in its grounds and are happy that we set aside the better part of a day (during our five-day stay in Porto) to visit.

I’m surprised Serralves doesn’t rate higher on here as it’s a stunning place to spend few hours. Away from a touristy buzz of Ribeira and other landmarks, Serralves is an oasis of green parks and gardens, mixed with a healthy doze of contemporary art and Art Deco. To appreciate modern art and sculptures scattered across the estate, one must be a contemporary art connoisseur, in my opinion. The collection in the museum is interesting and well- curated, includes installations, performances, photographs, painting and sculptures but it might not be to everyone’s taste.
The gardens, park, Casa Art Deco and Treetop Walk, on the other hand, give an opportunity to relax in nature, while admiring sculptures in the park, scattered around. The beauty of Serralves is undeniable.
Ticket for full access is on the pricier side so make sure you give yourself few hours of the afternoon to enjoy. It’s worth checking the combo tickets with other attractions.
There is a cafeteria and a restaurant with terrace overlooking the park, or you can stop for a drink and a snack at Casa de Chá Tea House, or make your own picnic by the lake.
Staff are very friendly and welcoming and the entire estate very clean and well- looked after. Cannot recommend it enough!

Went through the art museum and it was not interesting at all. Not worth your time and money. Restaurant looked interesting with a decent buffet.

After seeing some negative reviews we nearly didn't visit but it was one of our favourite things in Portugal - and that's adults and teens. The gardens are the perfect cooling and tranquil antidote to the hot, busy city, with plenty of shade and plenty to explore at every turn. We didn't get given a map or a guide but didn't mind just wandering - which we did for a very enjoyable 4 hours!

For our teen studying photography it was perfect as there are sculptures, artworks, pools, intetesting architecture and treetop vistas to capture. I'm glad we took a picnic to enjoy as there wasn't much choice to be had in the park - just the Casa da Cha for a refreshing cuppa!

It's not clear what is and isn't included in each ticket and there is no ticket booth at the entrance. As others have said there are random security guards, some of whom seem to let you into things and some of whom don't!

We had no issues as we were able to access the stunning house to see the Miro and Calder exhibition. Be prepared for plenty of breathtaking marble! We were also able to access the black box pavilion in the gardens to view an installation by a Japanese artist. Wow!!! Mind blowing and totally unlike any art I'd experienced before. Go see and you'll understand !

So park tickets don't give you access to the museum or the house of cinema but they may (or may not) give you access to the house and the 'black box'!

We thoroughly enjoyed meandering in this cool, tranquil and constantly surprising setting. For us it just kept giving.

But please Fundacio Serralves sort out your ticketing so it's clear what to expect. You have an amazing setting and an amazing offer - you could keep everyone satisfied with a few tweaks.

One last thing - just get an Uber - cheap, easy and plentiful in Porto 😀

Myself, my wife, and my two adult children visited on a Wednesday afternoon. It was relaxing and enjoyable. We enjoyed tbe park and farm best. The art deco house is very beautiful. We also visited the main gallery, we did not fund the art there as beautiful as the deco building. or the donkeys in the farm.
We all agreed it was one of our favourite trips in Porto.
