Loved these gardens. Plenty to see, a surprise around every corner. We got a cab up (€20 from the Lido area) and the cable car back. Great half day trip, well worth the money.

An exceptional place. Much more than a garden. Wonderful views. The African Passion collection is so different and well presented. Then the collection of Mother natures secrets wil make you stand in awe of what mother earth has created with such unbelievable minerals. Then there is the superb gardens, flamingos. The swans on the lake seemingly enjoying the waterfall of the picturesque lake. Hidden statues at every turn. Much to see. Get there by the cable car or the 20,21 or 22 bus to Monte. Enjoy.

Then the collection of Mother natures secrets wil make you stand in awe of what mother earth has created with such unbelievable minerals. Then there is the superb gardens, flamingos. The swans on the lake seemingly enjoying the waterfall of the picturesque lake. Hidden statues at every turn.
Much to see.
Get there by the cable car or the 20,21 or 22 bus to Monte.

I'm a huge fan of botanical gardens and this one was definitely one of my favorites. It's full of beautiful plants, sculptures, paths and ponds. The whole place is kept in Japanese style. The whole place is huge, located on the hill side, can give a filling of being in a jungle or some ancient abandoned place overtaken by nature

Huge number of cruise ship passengers visiting on a tight schedule

We wanted this visit to be so good, unfortunately the huge number of cruise ship passengers visiting on a tight time schedule, rather spoilt our day. The garens are very special, just the sheer number of othe visitors made it so less enjoyable. Not as man flowering plants, and shrubs as we expected, but the bridges and other garden infrastruture (hardly altered after our last visit 18 years ago) are impressive. Further down the valley ( and therefore a hard long walk back up), the crowds disappeared, and the garden features became less spectatcular. With the cable car closing quite early, ( and the evenings drawing in), the gardens are very likely to be so busy. On some days there can be 3, or more cruise ships arriving in nearby Funcal, the Monte Palace Gardens are certainly the number one tourist attraction.

Not in autumn

Just not worth your time. We were there in November and only flamingos gave us some wow feeling. Practiclly no blooming flowers. Maybe it's different in summer time. Don't waste your time in autumn. Because to see it all garden you need 2-3h.

Spend a few hours in a tranquil setting.

A place to see a wide variety of plants and trees in a well kept garden.
The water features offer tranquility and a space for reflection.
The gardens are busy, but you don’t really notice the other tourists.
Like all of Madeira the garden has steeps pathways and lots of steps! However, I understand there is an electric bus in the garden for those who cannot manage the physical demands of the paths.

Well worth a visit

Well worth a visit. It can be crowded but there's lots of space. Plan your route so you get to see as much as possible. There's a cafe at the bottom so stop there for a coffee and then walk back up the hill to the car park or cable car.

I spent a wonderful few hours meandering around these lovely hillside gardens which are huge! It’s quite a slog to get all the way back up to the entrance served by the Monte cable car, but there is a vintage car taxi service available at a cost of €5.

A Madeira must visit!

The cable car ride was magical. Seeing Funchal in a nutshell and ocean liners in its dock. The garden was indeed a gardeners delight if you love subtropical plants. Xmas poinsettia in a tiny pot is grown like a tree. So much to see and a ride in an vintage car is a must especially you have dodgy knees like mine. All in awesome!!!

Beautiful plants and gardens. Spectacular views both in cable cars as well as in gardens itself. Possibility to descent with sitting in a basket sliding via the road is also unique experience.
