I saw from the inside of the Monastery, which it adjoins. It was an ornate, lovely church, but I didn't feel that I needed to make a special trip just for this. Worth a look if you're there, though!

The Santa Maria Church attached to the Jeronimo Monastery is so gorgeous, both inside and outside.
Terrific flamboyant Manueline architecture adorns it, while the interiors are stunning with a beautiful altar, fab stained glass and Vasco de Gama ornate tomb.
Entrance to the Church is free, but I suggest also paying the fee to visit the Jeronimo Monastery (see that review).

The free queue to get in the church was massive when we went, I'm not sure if it was because there was a limit due to covid protocols or because it is always busy on easter weekend.

We had a Lisboa card so walked straight into the monastery and got to view the church from above. The high ceiling and support pillars are really impressive and frame the stained glass windows.

You probably only need about 30 minutes to have a look around, as it is just the main body of the church, but still definitely worth a visit, although if you have the time and money/Lisboa card it is worth heading into the Monastery to see that little bit more.

We viewed the church attached to the monastery, not the monastery. There are two lines. We picked the shorter line. There was no fee. There were no people monitoring dress for entry. There were signs advising behavior.
Upon entry you are struck by the pillars which resemble palms. The floor plan is very open and beautiful.
All along the area are wonderful, fanciful carvings.
Vanco de Gama is buried in this church.

We ended up visiting this beautiful church by accident as we mistook the entrance for that of the monastery but I am very glad we did. Stunning stone building. Some of the decorations included elephants which was unusual and interesting. Free entry.

We been too late in the evening so missed much of the parts of this vast place.
However there is so much to see and enjoy both in the church and the beautiful
monastery next to it.

Free to enter this single church unlike €10 for the beautiful monastery next door. And it is an amazing church, just wonderful, not just the main altar but side altars around the church, stained glass windows etc.

This church is part of the Jeronimos Monastery and it is separate from the cloisters. It’s free to enter the church but will have to pay €10 for the cloisters. If you are wondering whether it’s worth doing both, I’d highly recommend visiting the cloisters also. They are very different and it is the cloisters that is the highlight. The church has some very interesting features but overall, it is rather gloomy and dark and does not prepare you at all for the magnificence of the cloisters and monastery grounds.
What you’ll see in the church are the tombs of the explorer, Vasco da Gama who died in India in 1524, the poet, Luís de Camões (died 1580) and King Manuel I (died 1521). You’ll also see a very striking ceiling, spanning an extraordinarily wide central nave (30m). The ceiling is a single span with ornamental branch-like tracery vaults. Together, the vaults and the tall, slender trunk-like pillars that support the roof, create an overall effect that made me think of a forest.
If you are visiting the cloisters, make sure to find the viewing area where you get a special vantage point, looking down over the interior of the church towards the altar.
TIPS:
* There are 2 lines. The longer line on the right is for free entry to the church and the left hand line is for the cloisters. Here’s the catch - a cloisters ticket, doesn't get you into the church. You’ll have to exit the monastery grounds and line up again. We arrived early and went to the cloisters first but this was a mistake. By the time we came out of the monastery, the church line had grown much longer. If you're there early, I'd recommend visiting the church first when the line is likely to be shortest.
* Closed on Mondays
