Allow Yourself to Get Lost

OK, it's time to get lost. Allow yourself the freedom to just wander aimlessly with time on your hands and you will discover the pleasures of this very old hillside neighborhood in Lisbon. One of the original settlements, long been full of very narrow streets with steep narrow houses. Take a tram or cab or elvador up to the top and wander down. Walk slowly and notice everything. The area is changing with the big invasion of tourists, but it's still worth a slow visit. Stop and have a drink outside.

Recommend staying in Alfama. In the old town, beautiful views and historic charm. The Tram allows easy access everywhere.

A mixed experience

Perfectly lovely for walking -- narrow streets, fabulous views. But lots and lots of tourists. Part real town, part outdoor museum.

This is the old town close to the Catedral and the main streets for shopping, nice buildings, coffe shops, souvernir and more.

This area is very hilly to walk, has few worthwhile attractions, and covered in graffiti. I would call it a transitional area. If walking, easy to be confused and walk in circles. Best to see via the 28E tram (without stopping). Would skip if time is short and explore other areas.

Most beautiful part of Lisbon

Lisbon’s oldest neighbourhood is also its prettiest. There is much to explore here and it is nice to experience it on the Tram 28 or Tram 12

We wandered through the Alfama and discovered a ruined Roman Amphitheatre archaeology site, so cool. The narrow streets and alleys were wonderfully decorated with Moorish tiles and quaint balconies hung with laundry. We didn't hear Fado music but you could imagine city life here happening from medieval times forward. We later had a tuk tuk tour through the same are and discovered 11th century churches, mansions, and overlooks with grand views of the city and harbor. Alot of walking but so worth it.

Former romantic idyl

The colourful ceramic tiles that originally covered the buildings making the neighborhood romantic have fallen and been replaced by new paint as homes of the former residents have been converted to tourist accomodations. The steep alleys are full of tuk-tuks bringing more foreigners to look at each other and buy souvenirs, some maybe even made in Portugal.

Would Love to Return

Really enjoyed this part of the city, the steep winding streets were great. The Metro day pass saved us a lot of uphill hiking, highly recommend getting a pass right away when you start your sightseeing. Available at any metro station, the VIVA Viagem card just takes a minute to buy and is good for all buses, metro, trams and elevators in Lisbon.

Small steep alleys, you want to get lost!

Small steep alleys, nice shops and small cozy restaurants. A random serenade from a balcony and small cultural events in the streets. Had a really good time in this district, but wear comy shoes!
