Cute town, great easy half day trip from Lisbon by train

Very cute, wonderfully clean town with charming streets. Very pleasant and easy train ride from Lisbon. We rode the train to Cascais, walked around then walked back to Estoril and took the train back from there. Great walking, both beautiful stylish towns and nice day out.

There are some fairytale villas but the most impressing building for me was the modern red museum of Paula Rego standing on a vast lawn. A small crafts market was open Saturday in the park offering interesting bags made of recycled jeans and dyed leather.

Charming and Busy

This is definitely where you want to be when you are in town, as this area includes most of the good restaurants and fun cafes, plus lots of attractive buildings and sites. The charming part of the city, also the busy part for visitors.

The best was the food at Baia do Peixe. Be careful with all the mainstream locations offering traditional Portuguese food. Often foggy.

Take a day trip from Lisbon!

What a beautiful day trip from Lisbon. Train service was easy and affordable. Just walking around the town is a great way to spend a day!

There are some nice bits and we went in a rainy day so it was ok to look round. The beaches were NOT clean with waste floating in the sea. Also lots of younger people having fun who do not realise that other people do not want to listen to their loud music.

Small but charming historic centre.

Cascais has a small but attractive historic centre. The Museu da Vila and Town Hall are set in a plaza adorned with disorienting wavy pavement. A historic fort is nearby - as are the gorgeous beaches. Certainly an area to check out.

Disorienting Sidewalks and Charming Waterfront

The sidewalks in Cascais were patterned in wavy mosaics that we found disorienting but very picturesque. Lots of boutiques and restaurants, some more touristy than others, with cuisines to attract people who want to eat their own national cuisines rather than trying something more patently Portuguese. Our visit came at the end of our day-long tour, so we cut it short, walking about a mile through the shopping/eating area at the waterfront and then asking the driver to take us back to our hotel in Lisbon. I'd recommend taking more time to explore what Cascais has to offer, and of course, don't look down when walking on the sidewalks!
