It IS a beautiful spot, but be forewarned. All the photos you see, unless coming from the cemetery website, are illegal. There are signs for no photos, and the guards take it seriously. No photos allowed

Death is the great leveler, so they say. The cemetery, like most in Europe, has mausoleums for the more wealthy and paupers graves for the poor. The only thing they have in common in that the inhabitants are dead. It is interesting to wander around and the pathways are well maintained. After a few years the paupers graves are dug up and the bones transported to Coimbra University, which has resulted in the university having the largest human remains collection of any university in Europe.
I had to go here for the funeral of a friend some years back and all of the mourners were appalled at the way the gravediggers loitered very near the grave, smoking, while the coffin was lowered into the ground. Then immediately in was in, they started to shovel in the soil before the mourners could finish paying their respects. Total disrespect.

This on our last day of our holidays in Coimbra and Portugal and me and my poorly girlfriend went on a stroll around town and to visit this cemetary. It was quite slightly interesting with some unusual building styles and mausoleums some of which have clearly not been maintained. These are the kind of places that I find more interesting to visit, and although not big this place was very peaceful and had a great view of the river and the lands yonder and afar... I did reminisce ferociously about the good times and better times of the holiday which in fact is best carried out in such an environments. There were some figs on the trees but I wasn't tall enough to pick them so you should bring a ladder or at least a chair with long legs, maybe a high chair would do it. There is a small shop nearby which sells gaseosa and other items to eat and drink. Afterwards we went to the town centre where I did eat a poor quality mean and did commence being stared at by a lady of about 89. Then later we got the train back to Hendaye.

This cemetery is in the city of Coimbra.
From the moment you are entering the front gate, you can see that this is a very special place to visit, very well maintained on behalf of some graves with broken windows and not looked after, this almost certainly because there are no more relatives or they are living abroad as millions other Portuguese’s.
In size it is enormous and even than they have a place like a church on the end, following the main street where they keep the coffins on three levels on next the other, and next this place I had an open door when I looked through it, I saw left and right coffins on wooden supports.
They have in Portugal a totally different way to burry there dead relatives than in other places of Europe.
For my personally It is a really interesting place to visit.

From here you are not far away from the Penedo da Saudade.
