In preparation for the Frans Hals special exhibition at the Rijksmuseum (closing June 9), we visited Haarlem and explored this intimate small museum. The building itself is very beautiful, and displays works by other artists (both Dutch Golden Age and more contemporary) as well as important paintings by Hals. It was the perfect intro to the artist’s life and work, while the onsite café was excellent for a break. HAL, the sister museum in Grote Markt, was also worth stopping into (included in the admission price).

This was my prime objective of coming to Haarlem and staying in this town for long weekend. After visiting Frans Hals exhibition in London I was inspired by this painter.
We really enjoyed the visit and wish would have have more time to spend there. The audio guide was good and also lots of very detailed explanations about each painting.

This was a wonderful museum in a historic building. It was small and could easily be toured in a couple of hours. The collection was interesting and there were signs in English as well as Dutch. The audio tour was informative and easy to use.

We found the museum hard to find even with a map, not well sign posted and quite a way from the Centre.

They offered no Senior discount but you did get a free audio included in the price.

The cafe was nice and the staff friendly.

Felt there was a lack of Fran Hals paintings at he museum, but they did have other artists there and the dolls house was particularly lovely.

I came straight to Haarlem from the Eurostar arrival in Amsterdam and it was really easy, just down the stairs from the Eurostar and up to the next platform along and about a 20-minute train ride (I didn't have to scan my ticket out and in, which I thnk is against the rules but no-one arrested me so I think it's fine). I did find the Museum difficult to find however. Because the Frans Hals Museum has two locations Google Maps seems to get very confused and starts sending you round in circles between the two, but at least it gives you a chance to see the old town centre a few times on the way. Also you'll come across lamposts with signs pointing to the Frans Hals Museum in two different directions. As a wild generalisation, don't bother asking locals for directions - they don't seem to have a clue where they are, let alone anything else. So, be sure you know whether you're heading for the HAL or the HOF (though I'm still not sure which one I saw). One of them was closed when I visited, so I can't tell you what's the difference between the two. It seems a very Netherlands thing to close half a museum but still charge you the full price, which is particularly annoying for a penny-pinching Brit who is used to museums and galleries being free to enter, but they have to pay to maintain the collection and I don't begrudge them that. The gallery was very nicely presented, and having just arrived from London I was very happy to find pretty much all the galleries in the Netherlands have nice big free lockers to store backpacks, and you don't need a coin or anything to operate them.

If you think (like I did) that the Frans Hals museum is going to be predominantly about Frans Hals then that's a bit of a misnomer. It is a much broader collection than that, and is more a gallery of Haarlem and regional artists in general. The Hals' guard portraits are the centre piece but there's also a wonderful Mannerist Room and a number of incredible still lifes by Pieter Claesz and Willem Heda among many other fine works. There's a lot to see and to be honest having arrived at about 2.00pm I'm not sure I would have had time to see (or find) the other part of the museum had it been open.

Finally, many of the galleries in the Netherlands have adopted this awful habit of demanding you book a time slot when you buy a ticket online, but like all of them (except for the likes of the Louvre and the Rijksmuseum) the Frans Hals didn't seem to care about it when you arrive and they're generally pretty empty anyway. So I wouldn't get flustered if you're wandering aimlessly around the middle of Haarlem trying to find the place, worrying that they'll get stroppy with you for being late - they're Dutch and they don't care about you at all.

Adored this museum in a very old building with great explanations of both the building and the exhibitions. There was also an excellent short film about Frans Hals and his painting. Highly recommend. Easy 15 minute train trip from Amsterdam and the town of Haarlem is charming.

This museum is worth the trip to Haarlem from Amsterdam or nearby. Beautifully laid out in the historical building and the breadth and scope of his work and others displayed is a joy to see. Besides the great museums in Amsterdam, this one is a must see! Highly recommend the trip and the time to see this fantastic museum.

The Frans Hals Museum is typical of a Dutch museum in that it not only houses a superb art collection but is also a fascinating historic building in its own right. What surprised me more, however, was how comparatively few of the two hundred or so paintings on display were actually by Frans Hals himself. Take the first room, for example, which featured portraits not only by the great man himself but also his Dutch and Flemish contemporaries and even a photographic self-portrait by Sarah Lucas. Period seventeenth century furniture and even a small organ were as important features in one of the rooms as its paintings. There was an extensive exhibition of paintings of the town of Haarlem itself some commemorating sea battles which took place during the Dutch wars of independence against the Spanish. The culminating experience is a room housing some of Hals’s celebrated group portraits of members of guilds. But even a few of these were by Hals’s contemporaries, replacing works on loan to exhibitions around the world including one currently in the National Gallery London.
