Bridge over troubled water? I think not!
Des 2019
The Magere Brug (Skinny Bridge) spans the Amstel river connecting the banks between the Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht. The central section of the Magere Brug is a bascule bridge made of white-painted wood. The present bridge was built in 1934. The first bridge at this site was built in 1691 as Kerkstraatbrug and had 13 arches. Because this bridge was very narrow, the locals called it magere brug, which literally means "skinny bridge". The current bridge was designed by architect Piet Kramer for a steel bridge that looked the same as the previous, only slightly bigger. In 1994 the bridge is now opens automatically, not by hand. The bridge is limited to pedestrians and cyclists only and is decorated with 1,200 light bulbs which are turned on in the evening. Allow ~15 min for your visit.

Beautiful bridge, one of the most popular in Amsterdam. It's nice place to take a walk, expecially in the evening.

Famous Amsterdam sight
Agt 2019
The Magere Brug is one Amsterdam's most recognised sights. Unfortunately we didn't manage to see the bridge at night when I understand it is lit up with hundreds of lights, but whatever the time of day, the bridge is extremely pretty.

Walked to Skinny Bridge at night time, however, the canal cruise boats also go past. Didn't see much else around the area so maybe the cruise is best way to view (at night is best)

Will be on your walking tour
Okt 2019
I would guess this bridge is on every guide's walking tour of Amsterdam. It is in a great area to see lovely homes and houseboats. The bridge is just for pedestrians and cyclists; be sure to watch for the bicycles before you step out to take that perfect photo. This white wooden bridge connects the banks of the Amstel River at Kerkstraat. The bridge you see today is not the original. This replica has been around since 1969 and was opened manually until 1994.

A lot of history on this old bridge
Okt 2019
The Magere Brug, or Skinny Bridge is a bridge over the river Amstel in Amsterdam. Use of the bridge has been limited to pedestrians and cyclists since 2003. The centre-part is opened many times, daily, in order to let river traffic pass. The sightseeing tour boats are low enough to pass underneath the bridge when closed. The bridge is decorated with 1,200 light bulbs which are turned on in the evening.

A story told to tourists about the origins of the 1691 version of the bridge is that it was built by 2 sisters who lived on opposite sides of the Amstel river and wanted to be able to visit one another, every day.

A must see!
Jul 2019 • Sendiri
Located near the Ermitage musuem & the Amsterdam Opera, built on the Amstel river, this white paint wooden double drawbridge, connects the 2 banks of the Amstel river between the Keizersgracht canal & the Prinsengracht canal.

Also, Being of a narrow dimension, it is now reserved only for the use of the pedestrians and cyclists.

One of the most romantic place in Amsterdam this spot is excellent for photography or selfies lovers especially at night where several hundred candles provides a truly magical dimension to the scenery.

Small movable bridge

Delightful piece of Amsterdam. Especially on late summer nights. A place to stop, take in the view and admire the city from the water.

More than a standard bridge
Agt 2019
We saw this bridge open to let a boat pass under which is apparently quite unusual. We also saw it closed and walked across it. It is different from the standard bridges and worth seeing.

Cute places
Agt 2019
Worth seeing, mainly at night. It is typical for Amsterdam to have bridges but this one is one of a kind.
