Must Go Pub In Amsterdam
Jan 2016
Het Dokterje (Café t'Doctor)is in my opinion one of the must go pubs in Amsterdam and one that will stick in your memory for a very long time.Opened in 1798 and claiming to be Amsterdam's smallest pub'this pub was founded by a surgeon who worked in a nearby former hospital and was the hangout of doctors and medical students. This pub is tiny and it's interior is archetypal brown café.It looks like the walls and ceilings haven't been cleaned for decades there is a birdcage that is so dust encrusted that you wonder if it has ever been cleaned. The toilets are located upstairs and they have seating outside in the front of the pub.But make no mistake this pub is a must go destination if you are interested in historical pubs it is that good.Went here while walking around this area of Amsterdam and we always pop in and have a beer in here. The owner is without doubt one of the friendliest persons you will meet in a pub in Amsterdam and always makes a fuss of his customers. When here this pub had just opened and we were the first in we ordered our beers a couple of glasses of Brand beer which was served in perfect condition and at a very reasonable price. As we were the first in here it gives you time to have a look around this first class establishment it has many interesting features and is mostly candlelit which gives this pub a very unique atmosphere. If ever you are in Amsterdam and you are looking for historical pubs with a fascinating interior look no further than this pub.Located on Rozenboomsteeg.(This is my 2nd review of this pub). Opening hours are. Monday-Closed Tuesday-Saturday-16.00-01.00 Nearest metro or tram. Tram-Spui-01-02-05

So unexpected!

The Brown Bar as it is known locally is so unexpected!! A local friend took me there, and you have to be a local to know the place. It is hidden behind a door and you never know whether it will be opened or not. The bartender is the owner and the place is tiny and know for its dust and antiques. Really worth visiting! A great place to have a drink!

Eccentric cool place
Really tiny place, with a collection of dusty furniture and a eccentric owner that just matches the look of the place. Lovely atmosphere for a drink and a beer. But be warned, the barman will want to talk to you:-)

Wonderful old pub
Het Doktertje (Cafe t'Doktor) is one of the best pubs in Amsterdam.Tiny little place full of character and very very old (openened 1798) the place is dusty a bird cage is hanging above bar and has about a 100 years dust on it.The man behind the bar is a gentleman who treats locals and tourists the same.Very small inside must be one of the smallest pubs in Amsterdam toilets are upstairs an adventure to get to them beer is set at reasonable price a must go if you are in this area. Delightfully eccentric

Tiny bar crammed with dusty rubbish, playing background jazz. The barman helped us choose genevers. Pleasingly weird

Unfriendly Service and Filthy
Sep 2011 • Pasangan
I don't mind the dust and cobwebs on the walls, chandeliers and ceiling, but having dirty glasses is unacceptable. Not to mention the unfriendly service. This place is in the heart of the city and should be welcoming to all visitors, not just the locals.

Most unique old bar in Amsterdam-miss it already
Feb 2011
We went in to this bar without knowing what's behind the door. As we sat down we quite soon paid attention to those very old lamps on the ceiling with dust on them. My husband went to ask wheter the dust is real and the bartender, a real gentleman, said, yes they are over 100 years old. That's where the discussion started and we found out this bar has been there since 1798 and in generations. Selection of over 100 different whiskeys, genevers etc. The whole bardesk was made of silver. We visited this bar every evening, as it had such a great atmosphere. Don't miss it, it is on a small alley just off Kalverstraat, the shopping street.

I stayed here for 5 hours!
The best bar I've ever been in. Cozy, messy, delightfully dusty. Kind of like getting invited into someone's basement. The silver bar top is beautiful and the bartender is a pleasure to talk with. The trick is finding it open, because, as a family run business, they only seem to open it when they want to. But, when you do, what a treasure. No, no.... no, I mean I hate it, you should all not go there, because it's too small and dirty (and I want it all to myself...).
