Not difficult to find, I was crying as I read the story of this incident and walked through the calm, serene space. Recently had its 75th anniversary, 40 Cypress trees surrounding the burial site of 40 innocent civilians murdered by Nazis in 1944. Mother and daughter, brothers, a 17-year-old. Sweet, sad, tragic, lovely memorial.

This story and the pictures made me cry , a german officer was killed so the germans decided to get 40 people out of their houses at random and kill them to get their own back. They were mainly young people & some females that were shot against a wall. There are photos of each person inside & it is very sad indeed.

Da die meisten Kommentare in Englisch sind und grösstenteils sehr holperig bis unverständlich übersetzt, mache ich in dieser Sprache weiter:
On June 20, 1944 the German MD Dr. Kurt Staudacher and a lieutenant were having a drink in Gubbio as, unexpectedly, shots were fired. Dr. Staudacher died immediately, his companion was seriously wounded. In retaliation, the Germans arrested 100 men and some women and in the early hours of June 22, 1944 forty of them were executed, amongst them also one of the 4 young partisans. The daughter of one of the shot Italians, Guglielmina, and the son of the German doctor, Peter, both born 1943, met for the first time 60 years later, in 2004, at the German War Cemetary in Pomezia near Rome. Their story of reconciliation and forgiveness, is told by Giacomo Marinelli Andreoli in a new book, published by Marsilio Editori Venezia, entiteld NEL SEGNO DEI PADRI, ISBN 978-88-317-2625-2. A worthwile lecture, however at this moment only in Italian language.

The amount of bravery these men and women had is touching. The place is so sad even more so keeping the wall where the Germans shot them to death. Bullet holes still there.. I highly recommend to see this

It almost seems crass and sacrilegious to rate this moving place as an "attraction", but if it means that more people might visit it, so be it. I won't repeat the tragic story behind this mausoleum, as other reviewers have already done so, but it is so important that we never forget this dreadful event and so many others like it.

It was a very moving place to visit, and the feelings of sadness and tragedy were enhanced by the photos of the ordinary people who were killed.

Not an easy site to visit. It is the final resting place of forty Gubbians who were murdered because two German solders were killed by Partisans. I necessary reminder of the horrors of war. Should be included on any touristic visit to Gubbio, which is an Umbrian gem.

Containing the remains of 40 men/teenagers from Gubbio who were rounded up and killed by the occupying Nazis in retaliation for an earlier bombing by partisans which killed Nazi soldiers and officers. The mausoleum is fittingly somber and peaceful. Sadly, it's not the only such memorial in Italy.

This is a very important reminder of the souls that were killed because of the partisans of world war 2. The martirs in the memorial were killed by the Germans in world war 2. Partisans killed germans in a caffe by throwing a grenade where several dozen people were eating and having coffe, killing several germans, including a high ranking official. In turn germans rounded up all males in the city to get information or confession of the were abouts of these partisans, it did not happen and the male's were killed by the Germans in retaliation. True story.
