It is one of the most iconic images of Assisi. The view is amazing and it is the perfect way to climb the hill and reach the Basilica. If it is the first time in Assisi be sure to arrive to the Basilica from this road.

This is not the entrance to the Basilica complex, as some people seem to believe. This road runs from Via Arnaldo Fortini to Piazza del Comune. It is lined with souvenir shops, restaurants and the entrance to Foro Romano Museum

It is a short but densely packed street that connects Via San Francesco and the Piazza Del Comune. It is lined with shops, a few bars, and cafés.

A lovely esplanade offering a beautiful angle to view the Basilica di San Francesco. Love the paving and the cleanliness is immaculate!

Most people believe that Via Portica is the main square below the Basilica. This is incorrect. Via Portica is a short street that changes name to Via Giotto and connects Piazza del Comune with Via Arnaldo Fortini. It is lined on each side with many restaurants and stores. As you climb Via Portica towards the Piazza, you are afforded a very nice view of Torre del Popolo.

The town of Assisi is historic and beautiful. As you walk the ancient streets you can feel the spirit of the city. The view from the top of Via Portica is amazing.

Via Portico is a narrow, short street that connects Via S. Francesco to Piazza del Commune. It is lined with shops, restaurants, and gelaterias. Also provides a nice view of the top of the Campanile of Santa Maria sopra Minerva.
**IT IS NOT CLOSED TO VEHICLES, SO BE CAREFUL AND WATCH YOUR CHILDREN**
It is not the Piazza Inferiore di S. Francesco, which most people are referring to in these reviews.

The evening view of the Basilica and the surrounding countryside from here is really spectacular. This of course coupled with the portico which is memorable by itself.

Tuscany, Umbria ... how many ways can the average person say quintessential Northern Italy? Who would not want to spend several (rain-free) days here? So much to see and do and only a tourist's stop worth of limited time to taste it.

But here goes ...

The Basilica is the main player in town but the lesser ones are only minor by comparison. A day or two would be almost enough time to fully enjoy Assisi.

A walk to the Basilica will introduce the visitor to the compound in which the acolytes live, pray, and wait for their religious assignments. Sadly, the"Martyrs of Peru" (3 devoted Franciscan Fathers met their untimely ends at the hands of revolutionaries.

But, after touring the Basilica, some time, well spent, in this beautiful hilly area will soften reality with a glimpse of nature at its best. The street that weave their way up the hill, the quaint little cafe/bar shop offering "unique" food, the sights, sounds, smells, and bumps up against history are just what the doctor ordered. Maybe a few more days of rest would be advised (sign me up).

Even though it was rainy and cold the day of our visit, this area really would be a place we would gladly come back to for a couple of days. We still need to find the temple of Minerva!

To be continued (hopefully) ...

Enter the square and take time to enjoy the ambience and view of the Cathedral. There are some steps that take you up to the garden which also gives you a good view.
