One of the few private homes you can visit, with an extraordinary bedroom and a ballroom with music gallery

Palazzo Mansi is another Lucca gem worth visiting. Dating from the late 16th Century it is a wonderland to visit with beautful art on display, opulant decorated rooms, breathtaking tapestries and so much more.

On the curved ceiling of the ?ballroom which look out of perspective on entry but get straight when you move to the centre of the room. A delightful little palazzo.

This is a very striking museum. Fascinating, interesting, enjoyable. There is a wealth of Art to savour, from the Renaissance to the end of the nineteenth century. This is not just another Italian museum, but a time machine to a different age. Perfect for ending a day in and around Lucca before an evening meal - just make sure to leave yourself plenty of time, you’ll need it for everything that is on display.

Check opening times. The best time to go was around 12.30 as you could enter at any time to suit you. It is only open certain days and times. It was a quiet visit as most tours and groups were elsewhere thankfully!

Do visit all the floors, as there are some fascinating exhibitions, some with beautiful gowns, silks and clerical vestments. Beautiful paintings, through the ages and not all religious. The rooms created for a bridegroom and his bride, with delicate silk drapes, wall papers as well as tapestries was quite sensational if not a little overwhelming in its opulence. The rest of the palace is more simply decorated, though stunning.

Well worth a visit and do allow at least an hour to visit it all.

Straight off the cobbled street in the heat of a summer afternoon into a cool, calm haven which transported us into a more opulent and elegant era. The age of masked balls and twinkling chandeliers, rich tapestries, overwhelming gilded panels and sumptuous silks, the source of the wealth upon which this grand palace was founded. And all in peace and unhurried, no frantic sightseers - a tonic indeed.

We found buying multiple passes was a cost effective way of seeing many historic collections in Lucca. Some, like Mansi will not take much of your time but what is there is stunning. It also partly tells the story of Lucca when it was rich and powerful. The silk wallpaper (obviously hand made) wall hangings and decorations are superb.

If you have the time to get away from shopping, I recommend visiting the Museo Nazionale di Palazzo Mansi and the Museo Nazionale di Villa Guinig. (Combo ticket, cash only) We started at the Museo Nazionale di Villa Guinig at 11:00am, then had a lovely lunch, and strolled to the Museo Nazionale di Palazzo Mansi for the 2:00pm entrance. We toured both museums at a slow pace, as we seemed to be the only tourists there. Which is lovely, if you have been visiting museums and palaces in Florence or Rome. We felt that both museums are worth a visit. The second floor of the Palazzo Mansi is especially lovely, with furnished bedrooms, sitting (reception) rooms, and a small dining room.

The elegant Baroque palace with mostly original decorations of its interior is a home of the art museum with the collection of mainly post-19th century paintings and other works of art. It is an important gallery with very interesting works on display located in the beautiful building. One of the best museums in Lucca.

A nice problem for Italy to have is its wealth of art and impressive villas and palaces. There's certainly nothing wrong with Palazzo Mansi, except that if you've already been to Florence, you've seen this before but on a grander scale (Palazzo Pitti for example, or one of the Medici country villas). I spent a quiet hour here, enjoying the historic rooms and some nice artwork along with only two other visitors during the 2:30 entry time I had. (I'm not sure if it was because of off season, but they let visitors in at 4 specific times during the day, rather unusual I thought). If you happen to have missed all the other palaces on your Italy trip, them by all means visit this one. If not, I'd consider this one missable.
