We accidentally found this church thinking it was the more famous San Minato, which is higher up on the hill. It's plain, but has great architectural lines. Michelangelo was quite fond of this church. It is worth a visit and allows for quiet contemplation. We were not sorry we went the wrong way, as it brought us here. As it is a church, modest dress is recommended.

San Salvatore al Monte, which was probably built around the same time as the Abbazia di San Miniato al Monte but suffered later additions and refurbishments.

This often-overlooked church is a hidden gem of this part of the town. Michelangelo, who liked this area and its harmonious church, called it “la bella vilanella”. It was built at the beginning of the 16th century and restored in the 19th century, after the construction of Piazzale Michelangelo. The interior is very elegant and simple with a single nave and five chapels on each side marked by a double row of Doric style stone columns.

Just down from the Basilica and the cemetery is the nearby Chiesa San Salvatore al Monte, maintained by the Tuscan province of Friars Minor (a branch of the Franciscans). This is a very simple church that is missed by most tourists and should not be. The high altar has the venerated relic of the doublet of Saint Francis of Assisi - the dress that the saint wore in 1224 when he received the stigmata at La Verna. Michelangelo really liked this church; he called affectionately my beautiful Villanelle.

right next to this church is a charming little drug store which has these ancient medicines. probably thats what they used to use earlier. its interesting to see how civilisations have evolved form these kind of natural drugs to more scientific based knowledge. but going to places like this you see how little they knew back then.

Chiesa San Salvatore al Monte is a hidden gem. I passed the church on my way to visit the Basilica San Miniato al Monte. I went inside and I was surprised by its simplicity and beauty. It seems to be a quiet church that not too many knows about.

My sister and I were the only ones in there. So, if you have the time, please visit and have a look at the beautiful art, the original stained glass windows or simply light a candle in one of the 5 chapels or take a moment to just enjoy the silence...

This chiesa is truly a hidden gem and a must see!

You unexpectantly walk into this church which is almost at the highest point around.. its even further up that piazzelo michelangelo. a long walk up the mountain greets you with this beautiful church . walk around it and you can visit the cememtery which is open only till 5.
even inside the church the work is beautiful. it was under restoration while we were there so we missed some bits. but you can go under/behind the altar and into this heavenly little place, with candles lit .. there are steps going down. its not a cavern, its part of te church but its a soothing nice place.
in the evening as is the case with so many other churches all over italy, the church bells sound and it goes on for a while so that you can soak in the vibes and echoes and the sounds created and the waves go right through you. the sound waves. we sat here and saw the sun go down. and met a little boy who wanted to collect all the stones and give it to us.. and wanted us to pretend with him that those little stones were all money. it was a nice evening. making new little friends outside the church,

A Franciscan church that was built between 1499-1504. At first glance the plain exterior, the simple Renaissance style plaster facade, is quite nice. Inside is very sober, but interesting to take in. After the buzz of Piazza Michelangelo this was a very quiet church with few visitors.

Michelangelo described it as “la mia bella villanella" (my beautiful country girl)

Don't miss a stop at this church when you go to Pizzale Michelangelo! It is just a little further up the hill and the views are better. If you get to the church at the right time you may get a chance to hear the monks chanting. We got there at 6:30 pm.

Up on the mountain, located between trees, birds singing, less tourists.. That does the trick. Nearby church San Minalto I found much more impressive so walk on just a couple of minutes!
