Enjoyed learning more about the history of Florence, from a local… Would suggest doing some research on the Medici’s before your trip, as their footprint is everywhere in Florence. Even just watching the Medici series will give you a little background.

This is the historical government palace of the old Republic. It is a museum and city hall now. Very interesting and lots of painting and sculptures.

You can see a good deal of the place without paying for tickets. The Palazzo Vecchio, which anchors the piazza, played an important role in the history of Florence and its governance. You can walk through part of the lower level to see a courtyard and some very interesting architecture and nice sculptures without ever paying an admission fee. If you want a more in-depth look or to go up higher than the lower level, then admission is required.

We had booked a Secret Passage guided tour and it was excellent. The guide STEFANO was great: he interacted well with the small group and made the whole experience most interesting. Many of the "secret areas" of the Palazzo are not accessible except through special tours such as this.
The Palazzo as a whole is no less interesting. Still functioning as the Florence town hall, it is set up as a very good museum. The artwork is magnificent.
Take your time here and have a good look at the many rooms, halls and other areas open to the public.

This ancient palace is beautiful, as most things are in the historical center. It is great just to spend a while looking at it, analyzing all its details. You can't miss it when in Firenze

This large expanse of area surrounded by wonderfully grand buildings, statues and history. Take a bit of time to look around, take photos and relax. The open area and joining of spaces makes this quite unique in a crowded Florence environment. Of course, in busy times, this space would probably be filled by people.

I don’t often (if ever) write reviews, if I could give 0 stars for my experience I would. This review is in relation to the tower and in particular the woman “guarding” entry to the tower with glasses and curly hair. Her attitude was disgusting. We were a few minutes late to a slot at the tower, the guy at the bottom of the stairs allowed us entry as we were late and told us to walk up. We were then met with the woman who practically shouted that we were late and could not enter, that the man at the bottom of the stairs must have not know the timings but he was wrong and we could not enter, she told us to walk all the way back down and ask to change our tickets (we later did this to be told she was wrong and we could not change our tickets). In complete dismay at her attitude I ‘exhaled’ and she told me it wasn’t funny and said that I was laughing at her.. this woman does not know the meaning of customer service and obviously also does not know the ticket policy to her job. This woman alone completely ruined our experience of the tower with her attitude.

The adjacent square is a lovely place to enjoy a morning coffee or an aperitif (we liked Café Rivoire), as well as admiring the outdoor Renaissance gallery – the replica of Michelangelo’s David’s (the original in the Bargello is so much better) standing opposite Hercules; Donatello’s Judith beheading Holofernes; Giambologna's Rape of the Sabines; Cellini’s Perseus brandishing the severed head of Medusa; Ammannati’s Fountain of Neptune (celebrating Florence's dominion over the sea); and Giambologna's equestrian statue of Cosimo; plus a plaque marking the spot where Girolamo Savonarola was hanged and burned.

We loved the Palazzo but, if you are pressed for time, this should probably be slightly down your list of Florence’s many galleries and churches. If you do decide to go inside, I recommend taking a guided tour. Or do some research and arrive around 4pm to avoid the crowds. Here some of my highlights:
• The Vasari paintings (over two floors)
• Hall of the Five Hundred.
• The tiny Studiolo of Prince Francesco (the painted wall panels hide cabinets which were crammed full of treasures)
• The Room of Jupiter,
• Hall of Maps (you may need to queue as there is limited number of people allowed)

If you want to climb the tower for the city views plus the prison cell (€12.50 extra), you might want to pre-book as tickets are very limited.

Beware of scams with booking websites such as one run by Headcount!! Their site looks like the official ticket seller for Palazzo Vecchio but your tickets will never arrive: you will receive emails saying that the tickets will be with you shortly, then that there is a delay in processing them...

Impressive architecture, quality food, and plenty of shopping! Not to mention the delightful gelato! Took an eye-opening tour of the Palazzo Vecchio as well.
