Great place overrun in October. You can thank the producers of White Lotus for ruining Taormina for everyone. The city is gorgeous with some wonderful restaurants and sights. Unfortunately half the world wants to see it. Amphitheater is truly remarkable but get there early as the tour groups descend upon it in hordes You’ll probably still go but don’t say you weren’t warned.

Yes there was a small queue to gain entry , but it moved smoothly
You can get a guided tour, or do what we did just wander
You can read about the teatro there , QR code , and it’s worth reading about it beforehand
The size and grandeur are amazing, the panorama from so many points mean you are constantly wanting to take photos
It is worth sitting and trying to imagine being there watching something 2000 years ago
It was such an opportunity to see it

After visiting Mount Etna we finished the day off going to Taormina. Very touristy, but interesting, the main objective was the amphitheater. What a place. Seeing the mixture of Greek and Roman remains of the amphitheater (yes, the Romans used brick) against the amazing backdrop of the coastline and Mount Etna is amazing. Well worth the visit.

The Greek Theatre of Taormina is a beautiful historical monument in the pearl of the Ionian Sea. Dug out of the hard rock of Mount Taurus in the 3rd century B.C., it could accommodate thousands of seated spectators and the shape allows for perfect acoustics! Put on your comfy shoes, the top is quite a walk but the beautiful views are worth it at the top!

I read before hand that we must visit this amphitheater in Taormina and we luckily made it. Easy to find, right in the city centre. We arrived around 11:00, long queues but bearable, less than 10 minutes to purchase your tickets. We spent about 30 minutes there which is ample time to cover the whole place. Steps are not bad. Toilets, cafe and library are up there.

12€ to get in and fairly quick moving queue. Amazing views from the site and agree somewhat that views are ruined by modern day plastic chairs and production equipment but it’s also amazing that it continues to be an entertainment site. As we were leaving we spotted an elderly couple - the wife was fanning the husband who looked really unwell. I asked the man who was working on the ticket area for some water for a gentleman that looked unwell. He directed me to purchase water at the cafe back at the top of the site. I explained again that it was for the man who didn’t look well and at this point, the staff member turned away from us. There was no call for first aid and clearly no care at all for visitors. As a site that gets a lot of elderly visitors, with lots of steps in high temperatures, there should be drinking fountains around. I wish now that I’d done more and hope the man was okay.

This is a must visit site when you go to Taormina. I went during the daytime but would suggest evening to get the sunset. You can see why they chose this locale!!… spectacular views out over the coastline and with Mt Enta centre stage. During eruptions this is a once in a lifetime photo-op. They hold all types of opera, music and theatre throughout the season.

Ok, so I lovvvvvved this theatre. It’s like everything I thought it would be, it’s exactly like in the photos. I was very lucky when I went, with a beautiful sunset. I stayed here for a couple of hours, there are 2 panoramic viewpoints., the coffeeshop and the shop terrace. It was 10€ entry and its easily accessible from Corso Umberto… THIS THEATRE ACTUALLY BLEW

Very very impressive! Easy to buy tickets before the visit and then to see the huge arena and restoration. Had no issue with the current use for events. There is plenty to see. An added plus were the views from the top mezzanine of the entire coast.

We are considering going to a concert that starts at 9:30 in the evening, so it will be too dark to see the spectacular view here. We have only been here during the day to wander around and view the theater as a tourist attraction. It seems all the seats would be good, but wonder about the acoustics. Does anyone know from personal experience if it is necessary, or worth it, to pay for the more expensive tickets to enjoy the concert, or would you say all the seats are good? Thank you for your help.

As we haven't attended a concert there, we can't really answer this question. Some tourist did come in during the day singing and I did notice that the accoutics were excellent from the top, centre at the back where we sat most of the time enjoying the view. You should still be able to have a lovely night view as the coast is lit, and with any luck perhaps even moonlight.

We are staying at a hotel at the other end of the town; it looks to be about a 1 mile walk to the theater.
Any suggestions of guides to use; or just wing it?

It is about a km or so from one end to the other, but it's a lovely walk (especially when the weather cooperates. There are many shops and restaurants along the way to occupy your eyes and your time. I've been there a few times and I'd say "wing it!"
