We were wandering the streets of Ortigia, just enjoying the warren of small streets and soaking up the history of the city when we chanced upon this small and unassuming church. I never pass up the chance to see a church but my husband was "done". The church itself is small and in need of upkeep and easy to pass by but I noticed the stairwell at the entrance of the church and asked the attendant about it. I was told their was an interesting underground tour we could take if we would wait 10 minutes. The cost-whatever we would like to donate. I convinced my husband and we are both so thankful that we took the time to see this incredible site. We were totally unprepared for what we saw under the church as well as the history of this unique space. Without giving it all away-The area and tunnels under the church have been used as crypts, water source, Jewish baths and bomb shelters. More than 10,000 people used the tunnels during WWII so you can imagine how immense this tunnel system is. There are many interesting sites in Ortigia but this relatively unknown church should definitely be at the top of your list. Please don't forget to make a donation, the church is definitely in need of major repair just to keep it open and safe.

What a unique and interesting find! We peeked in to check it out and came back for the tour. We were so glad we did! The history and wall images and drawings were so unexpected! We loved hearing the stories about the ancient ritual baths, crypts, and caverns where people hid during World War II. What a treasure!

You will probably miss it.
It doesn't look like a top spot, a fomo place, a not to miss, an impressive attraction. It is not big like the Duomo, Ortigia Cathedral, it is not located in a easy to get to spot like on Piazza Duomo, it is not on your way to Maniace Castle.
But still you should make time for this once a Synagogue Church and go out of the usual paths to visit it.

The church is interesting in its own right, however, descending into the church’s script makes the visit unique. At the bottom level, which serves as the church’s foundation, you will see the ruins of a synagogue and a mitzvah. Next lével is taken by the catacombs (ex-quarry) that were used in 1943 as a bomb shelter. The wall graffiti of Allied bomber planes and paratroopers left by an unknown child almost 80 years ago are worth a thousand history textbooks. The upper level, appropriately, serves as a cemetery decorated by existential messages from dead people to those who are still alive. This all construct sounds pretty eclectic, if not kitschy, but, strangely, you leave the San Filippo with a fresh sense of eternity which exists only in Italy.

Great church but please note: yours if the crypt etc do only happen between April and October. Then they are every half hour in morning and afternoon with a gap between 12:30 and 15:30

We noticed this church with visits to the underground (a donation is requiered after tour). So glad we chose to visit it. You led down stairs to the christian crypt and then deeper to where the people sheltered during World War two bombing, our bombing on Siracusa :'(. The place let us think about how horrible is the war. You go even deeper to the ancient Jewish purification bath (miqwe). It's well worth hunting it out.

Remarkable and spooky ancient catacombs under the church are the best place (along with the catacombi di san giovanni) to view the ancient Greek tunnels under the city - plus an ancient Jewish ritual bath.

So thrilled we stopped and enjoyed a tour of this church and it's incredible history. We were taken round by a delightful gentleman who, although sometimes struggled with his Engilsh, went to great trouble to give us the history of the church. Steep steps to tackle though so be aware.

Reading some reviews on trip advisor about this church and with a few hours to fill before leaving we decided to visit. What an experience. We walked past this church 2 or 3 times a day without realising the history under our feet!! Find the church and do the half hour tour. Jewish, Greek and Roman origins. Mikes of tunnels connecting about 40 churches in Ortigia. Used in WW11 by the people of Ortigia to survive the German invasion. Do your self a favour and visit.

We walked past this church one day and spotted a notice (in Italian) saying they do guided tours of the underground levels. went along the next day, and were really impressed. It's free (just leave a donation) and you see 3 levels including a Jewish Mikvah at the bottom. Fascinating if you like subterranean sights (Or sites..).
