Charming, beautiful area. We did a day trip from Catania via bus.
Enjoyed strolling the streets, visiting the local food market and following the beautiful coastal streets. Enjoyable lunch at delicatessen near market area.
We would thoroughly recommend a day trip or longer stay in Ortigia.

Wander slowly around Ortigia. There is so much to see and explore. We loved the Cathedral, the Market and Piazzas.

This little island is full of life, lots to see both modern and historic, plenty of very small streets but do mind the motorbikes etc that frequent them as well as you.
Plenty of restaurants.
In you're in the vicinity don't miss it.

It is worth to visit. The Artemis temple and the church on top. Nice narrow streets where you can try cannoli and Limoncello. We visited Syrakus and the archeological parc with the greeck theatre and Roman arena was really impressive.

We took a boat trip around the island of Ortigia, with a boat trip with Oceano Excursioni situated by the bridge onto the island.
20 euros per person for a one hour boat trip.
The people were excellent in every way, very friendly and helpful. Highly recommended..

Spent half a day here on way to Taormina. Walked from the area of Temple of Apollo and the lively market all the way to the castle Parked in Talete parking lot with no problems and could use app easy park to pay.. The castle was very unique with its mirrored floors for an art exhibit and the views were beautiful.

I have spent a total of six months in Ortigia over the last four years.
I am an artist and an arts networker.
In the past I have lived in Florence and on the Amalfi Coast .
Both wonderful places...but Ortigia is my favorite place of all.
Ortigia is the historic district of Siracusa.
It is an island connected by two short bridges.
The island itself is a little less than a kilometer by 660 meters.
Within that small area are a multitude of sites and experiences.
Personally I feel to really see and experience Ortigia if your time is limited plan on spending at least three days and if your time isn't limited a week, including a visit to the beautiful city of Noto.
Within a few minutes of entering Ortigia you are standing in front of the remains of the Temple of Apollo.
The open market next door is on a long street with all types of things being offered and wonderful eateries.
One of the most famous places is Borderi, where
Andrea and his son,Gaetano make incredible sandwiches.
They also make the delicious cheeses that are sold there.
Check out the numerous videos of them on YouTube.
Being an artist I have had the good fortune to meet a number of artists and artisans.
If you are interested in getting to visit them there is a lovely woman,Pelin Bayer, who offers personalized tours.
You will get to meet great artists, like sculptor,Stefania Pennacchio, ceramics artist,Giacomo Lo Presti, and many others.
Just meeting Pelin,is a wonderful experience
She's originally from Istanbul, has lived in Amsterdam and is one of the most charming people I have ever met.
Check out her Facebook page and website,
Pelin's World.
Pelin also offers a wonderful two floor apartment
within an ancient palace.
In terms of accommodations there is a wide range of places to stay.
I've met several people that have wonderful places.
I stayed at Cam Casa,a lovely one bedroom apartment for two months.
The owner Chloe,is a fantastic host.
Casa Fab offers elegant apartments in an ancient building.
If you like to spend time at the beach they also have a beautiful house for rent in nearby Fontane Bianche.
Another place I can recommend is Lucia's Garden.
It is in an ancient building with a lovely courtyard.
The owner Pietro's family has lived there for generations.
Another wonderful place is Palazzo Gancia.
The host Sebastiano, offers his guests wonderful suggestions on places to eat and sites to see.
Outside of the many sites to visit just to wander the streets of Ortigia is a great experience.

Unfortunately, we only had a half day there but could happily have spent a couple because there is so much to see. Simply wander around the streets and the island. We had a lovely trip around the bay which on a hot day was very welcome.

This is a wonderful place to simple wander the streets exploring. It is very picturesque. We ate at Le Vin de L'assassin, which I just reviewed on trip advisor. It was fabulous!! We were in Ortigia early morning as they were setting up the market. There is a great spice vendor right across from the fish vendor. I bought some of his pepper mix, which is great. I would love to return here someday.

We went here for part of our honeymoon in Sicily. Many people spend a day here but we spent 6 days here and we’re not bored for a minute! Not overrun with tourists and endless churches and history-not to mention the Mediterranean. We love food and you could spend a month eating. One of my favorite places in all my travels!

hi fabio,
can you advise the location for the 3rd photo with the water and cliffs. looks beautiful - is this close to ortigia? and can you swim in these waters? do you also have any recommendations for safe, not too expensive parking in ortigia. we will have a rental car with us and concerned about where to park.

All the photos are all directly in Ortigia - yes you can 100% swim - we swam every day. I’m not sure about parking as we didn’t have a car, but I recall seeing a parking place right as you cross over the small bridge from Siracusa. Ortigia is so easily walkable that distance from your car wouldn’t be a problem. Hope this helps!

I need to book plane tickets from Lyon to Catania and Palermo to Naples. I'm not sure whether I should buy them now or wait a little longer. We're not there until mid September but EasyJet doesn't give refunds so am worried about booking too soon and leaving it too late and seeing prices double or triple. Any suggestions?

My husband and I will be in Sicily in Sept/Oct this year (all going well with the unrest in the world and/or Covid etc) I am confused and need guidance...we're starting our Sicilian adventure in Palermo and have chosen to stay there for 6 days and take day trips then take the 4hr train to Syracuse ... stay in Ortigia for 2 nights then stay in Catania for 2 nights before heading to Rome. So should we stay in Syracuse just outside Origia or stay in Ortigia and if the later where?

10 days—- stay in Palermo for3/4.
Agrigento for2; Catania for 3.
Hire a car.
See Palermo, Mon Reale, Segesta.
Drive via Cefalu to Catania. Do Catania Taormina Etna Syracuse from there.
Drive then, via Piazza Armerina to Agrigento and Selinunte.
Drive back to Palermo via Erice and Marsala.
Buy an Insight Guidebook, or an Eye Witness one.

As written in the 2 aseres before, because of the structure of the Ortiga Peninsula it is not recommended and there is no need to use a bike. An easy and comfortable hike is highly recommended.
