Chiesa del Gesù di Casa Professa is a beautiful baroque church in Palermo. The exquisitely decorated interior is absolutely stunning being almost entirely white marble. The ceilings are decorated with beautiful paintings of biblical scenes; the columns and arches of white marble carved and painted over almost every square inch; the high alter consists of sculpted marble and statuary from floor to ceiling; the floors are polished marble and more mosaics.

A stunning baroque church - the first church built by the Jesuits in Sicily. The plain frontage is in complete contrast to the highly decorative interior which is covered in marble inlay and stuccoes by Giacomo Serpotta. Entrance to the church is free but you have to pay to visit the museum and crypt. Definitely not to be missed.

The most beautiful of Rome's Baroque churches is located a block from Piazza Venezia. This is not accidental. Pope Paul III, who authorized the formation of the Jesuit Order, lived in the Palazzo Venezia and invited the founder of the Jesuit Order Ignatius Loyola to build a chapel next to him. Due to lack of funds, Loyola was unable to do this during his lifetime. This was already done by the ruling generals of the Order in 1568-1584. Il Gesu is not a simple church, it is the reference church of the Counter-Reformation movement. The fact is that the Protestants relied on attracting the flock through religious education, translation of the Bible into national languages (from Luther). This undermined the position of the clergy. The Catholic Church has relied on the emotional impact on the flock. The Mass began to acquire the features of a theatrical performance, accordingly, it required a new organization of the church space. The Church of Jesus was designed with one spacious nave, a large dome and a space in the middle of the cross. All this focused attention on the altar, which served as a stage. But perhaps the greatest effect is achieved by the ceiling frescoes by Giovanni Battista Gaulli. Having started work on the ceiling at an age, he completed it at the age of 40. The Genoese master was able to create in his fresco "The Triumph of the Name of Jesus" the illusion of floating in the air. This masterpiece in the trompe l'oeil technique was created by the master a century after the construction of the church itself. This made it possible to connect the real and irrational world. Although the Chapel of St. Ignatius was built according to the project of Andrea Pozzo, a member of the Jesuit Order. The sculpture of St. Ignatius is framed by two composite columns. The altar is inlaid with precious stones, lapis lazuli and marble. The relics of Ignatius Loyola are kept under the altar. On the lower section there are sculptures of Faith and Religion, overcoming Paganism and Heresy. Another significant chapel is the chapel of another general of the Order, Francis Xavier. executed in 1674-1678 by Giacomo Della Porta. The relics of Francis are in the Basilica of Bon Jesus in old Goa, and in the bronze reliquary on the altar there is only his right hand. On the altar is a painting by Carlo Maratta depicting the death of a saint on the island of Shangchuan Dao near modern Hong Kong. In addition to the above, there are also Chapels of the Holy Trinity, the Holy Family, and the Sacred Heart. Also with a lot of jewelry, but with a less simple composition.

Chiesa Del Gesu was a surprisingly gorgeous baroque church which was bombed during the Second World War and restored over several subsequent years. The result of the restoration and continued preservation was quite stunning and more than worth our visit.

Pictures do not do this church justice. This is the most beautiful baroque church in Palermo. Purchase a ticket to see ALL areas available. You will be happy you did. It is a stunning church. You could stare at the altar, walls, and chapels for hours. There is a huge wood paneled room behind the alter that holds the priest's liturgical vestments, which is a work of art. There are other rooms too you can visit that display church items and conservation work. The staff is very helpful and love to answer questions.

The most beautiful church in Palermo, maybe anywhere. An amazing assembly of marble and semi-precious stone installed over several hundred years. It's only a short walk from major streets but very worth your time.

The opening hours are:
Monday until Saturday from 7.00 to 18.30.
Sunday from 6.30 to 13.00 and from 18.00 to 19.45.
The Museum opens at 9.30 am and closes at 5 pm or an hour before weddings. Sunday is closed.
I found this at the church's website - casaprofessa
You can read more about the church there. It's an incredible place. Plan on spending a lot of time there. The level of detail and the workmanship are mind-blowing, perhaps the best I have seen and I have seen a lot of churches at this point.
One bit of advice. Always get hours open from official websites. Others are frequently wrong. Sometimes even the official one is. Even better is to call and verify, if you have the time.
Have a great trip.

There is a side chapel to the right of the main altar. It has a white marble bas relief over its altar and a painting on the left wall of a young man standing on a platform. Does anyone know to whom this chapel is dedicated and/or the subject of the painting, the artist, etc.?
