We had no time or way of stopping at the memorial to Falcone, but be sure to look out for it as you travel between Palermo and the airport. Also, to as you head in to the city you'll see the iconic "No Mafia" inscription up on the hillside to the right. By this time you will have probably have noticed that the airport has recently been named in honour of Falcone and th other notable victim of the mafia, Borsellino. Both men were magistrates who paid with their lives in the early 1990's for daring to investigate the mafia.
If you want to learn more about thee times, and a lot more still about Sicilian culture and history then an essential book to read before you go and while you are there is "Midnight In Sicily" by Peter Robb. Although classed as a travel book it is much more than that, with extended discussions about Guttuso, "The Leopard", Sicilian cuisine, and much much more. It's beautifully written - the book is a perfect enhancement of your trip to Sicily, and then try "The Leopard" as a companion piece and you'll be fully prepared for the Palermitan experience.

Judge Giovanni Falcone died when his Lancia Thema was bombed on the autostrada and this monument was erected near the spot. Try (only try, Italian traffic!), to slow down to see it.

This monument about the darker days of Palermo was worth the quick visit. Right on SS 19 in Palermo.

Well worth stopping to look at this monument on the motorway as it remembers a dark day in Sicily's history. The locals say that due to the work of this judge and others that life in Sicily is much better now.

A chilling reminder while you enjoy your wonderful holiday that people gave their lives to diminish the reign of the evil Mafia on this island. Our tour guide had a graphic recount of taking her daughter to the police to complain about something or other Mafia-related and the policeman didn't want to know - her daughter gave her Mother a hefty kick on the shin under the table for her cowardice. The young people were a motive force in facing down the Mob.

As you travel around Palermo, you will find occasional reminders of the darkest period of the Mafia in the 1990's when, feeling under threat, they blew up the magistrate Giovanni Falcone, his wife and police escorts and killed the priest Guiseppe Puglisi, whose tomb is in the cathedral.
Here is the monument to the death of Falcone and, if you have a guide when you travel along Highway A29, he will show you where the event took place and the building which the Mafia used as their base. It didn't stop there - Falcone's colleague Paolo Borsellino and five police officers were killed two months later.
Killing fellow families in the Mafia is one thing, but these changed public views of the Mafia (and its link with politicians and with the United States) and enabled a new political determination to deal with it, though this has yet to be completed.

On our way to the airport you will see the monument. Our drive was telling us what happened and when we stopped showed us photos of the explosion.
