Really disappointing. You can't visit unguided. The tour was on a tight timed schedule. The poor guide was obviously stressed, had to try and give the tour in 3 languages and deal with a disabled person who had a different access points to the rest of us. The tour was 45 minutes for 12 euro which is expensive. Even though there is a lot of information available on the walls, there is no time to read it! And worst of all, they have imposed a 'son et lumiere' show over the famous Guttuso picture, so it is impossible to let the picture speak for itself or to appreciate it quietly. Really disappointing.

We hadn't planned to visit but were walking past with some time to spare and popped in to find that you can't go round by yourself but there are hourly guided tours - it seemed really interesting so we signed up and are so glad that we did. Our guide spoke perfect English and was so informative - we learnt about the history of the building from it's time as a palace for the Chiaramonte family through to it's time as a tribunal for the Spanish Inquisition in the 1600-1700s.
There is little in the way of torture implements - what you do see are the engravings, poems and paintings on the cell walls that tell the tales of the people who were incarcerated in the prison and these are explained in detail in the tour.
You also get to see the famous painting of Vucciria market painted by Guttuso which is now in a chapel within the complex which is actually now a part of Palermo university - definitely worth seeing.
The tour lasts about 50 minutes and is well worth the 5 euro entrance fee - you learn so much about the history of Palermo as well as a terrible period in history. Would highly recommend a visit.

We had very good time at Steri
Palermo was an amazing discover and Palazzo Steri is a cherry on the top of the cake. We highly recommend a touristic guide just to understand what really is that place. A great thank you to Vivian a local guide that leaded us. She was exhaustive and competent and very helpful solving our matters and questions about all around the town.
We'll be there again

Guided tours only to this venue. Lots of information, mainly about wall etchings and their creators discovered under plastered walls during renovations. The etchings were done by prisoners incarcerated in the building when it was a jail. Interesting history and worth a visit.

A very competent and polyglot Viviana guided us through the cells once occupied by hundreds of victims of the vicious Spanish Inquisition. We knew about this dark period of "religious" history but were still unprepared for the horrendous - though soberly told - stories of barbaric repression, torture and executions. A must-see, especially if you belong to the Catholic Church.

Moving and eye-opening exhibit of the Inquisition's prison cells. Excellent tour guides cover the history of the admittedly gruesome events; the visit of the cells themselves is fascinating and impressive. Well worth the 45-to-60 minutes.

Guides are helpful and knowledgeable. Ours was comfortable in at least three languages.

I did not mean to suggest that the museum was trying to downplay or soft pedal the gruesome history of this 14th Century palazzo. Rather, I was merely referring to the white paint that was put on the prison cell walls. The paint tended to sterilize and sanitize the persecution under the Spanish Inquisition that took place here so long ago, but the graffiti paintings that were left by the prisoners (male and female) are moving and poignant. They convey the desperate situation in which they found themselves.

One can only visit this palazzo on a guided tour. My English-speaking guide was excellent, although the tour itself was much too rushed. Don't let the channels that allows the prisoners' blood to drain down the stairs deter you from visiting this place. The bonus at the end of the tour is the famous painting of La Vucciria by Renato Guttuso.
