Valeria was super informative and friendly. Her guided tour was exceptional, with very good English as well 👍. I recommend stopping by to learn about the history of Saint Agatha.

Sant'Agata alla Fornace church is a very important place for the people of Catania. The tradition says that here is the place where Saint Agatha, the patron of the city, was tortured. This and many other interesting facts and legends can be learn during the guided tour. It costs only one euro per person and you have the opportunity to learn from passionate young guides like Luca a lot about the saint, about the church and about Catania.

Saint Biagio Church locates on Plazza Stesicoro just opposite to the ancient Roman Amphitheater. You can climb up to higher level in order to have better views over the ancient ruins.

Next to the Cathedral Saint Agatha aon thAe other side of Via Vittorio Emanuele II there is another church that also is dedicated to the same Saint and lies on the Street of Saint Agatha. Here is a possibility to get a bird’s view of the Cathedral and the City. The tower of Saint Agatha Church is open in the morning till noon, and in the late afternoon from 4 pm. There is a lift that goes up to a roof. The problem is that you can see very little from this level. There are just some rather small holes in a wall that are too high to look over. So, if you cannot walk some stairs it is no point in using the lift. However, if you can walk another two to three levels in a very narrow staircase you will be richly awarded with a magnificent view over the city with Mount Etna in on direction and the Sea in the other. The lift makes it more possible for many to climb the tower, but you must climb a substantial bit yourself.

Centrally located in the plaza is uninterestingly unadorned cathedral. Spacious and majestic it was a relief from mosaics (however wonderful they were) and truly reverent.

I lost count of all the amazing churches I visited in Catania. This one in a large square just off the main street and overlooking Roman ruins.

This church is halfway up the hill overlooking the ruins of the Roman amphitheatre. The doors are huge and inside the church is enormous. It is a typical Sicilian church and on Sunday was packed with parishioners. It is free to enter but there is a charge for the dome.

We were walking in Catania and entered the Church just to take a look. Inside we met Luca, a very kind and enthusiastic guide, who explained to us who was Saint Agatha, the patroness of Catania and her story, as well as the history of the church. It represents one of the tortures of Saint Agata.
There is a very small price to pay for the explanation, but the entrance to the Church was free.
