Located close to the beautiful and biggest square (piazza unità d'Italia) in Triest this oriental art museum is established in a private palazzo which was donated by her last owner to the city of Triest.

The museum is stuffed with exceptional objects, art, weapons, outfits, furniture, paintings .... etc etc
So much to admire!

No entrance fee, friendly staff!!
Not crowded.

My advice: take the lift to the upper floor and walk down ...

Nice museum. Not too big (3 floors) with mainly Chinese, and Japanese art. I especially appreciated the Chinese drawings. Some of them are worldclass.

Beautiful little museum near the center of the city. The employees are very polite and professional, also ready to share their knowledge and point out most interesting details. Also the entrance is free.

Smallish yet excellent museum displaying artwork from India, China and Japan as found in Trieste. The collection, specially considering that Trieste is far from being known as a world-class museum city, is impressive, including priceless reliefs from Hellenistic India. Handy, well-suited location in the heart of the (itself very charming) old city. Best of all, it is free.

This boutique museum is housed in a renovated historic building in the very heart of the old city. Adult admission is reasonably priced, especially taking into account what visitors can actually see on three floors - a feast of silk, lacquer, jade, mother-of-pearl and the like. There is plenty of space between vitrines and the rooms are not crowded, so many opportunities for exploring the exhibits in a relaxed, enjoyable and rewarding way. It clearly focuses on oriental art but also explores the century-long fascination of the higher echelons of European society in China and Japan. Furthermore, this choice also harks back to the heydays of maritime trade, when local steamers plied the sea routes between Trieste and remote Far East ports.

What struck me most was the contrast between the convincing historic and artistic quality of the exhibits and their interpretation. Text seemed to aim at specialists; uses jargon or resorts to wordy, convoluted descriptions. Some panels and labels are in fine print and placed in unbelievably awkward positions that force visitors to balance on their tiptoes or bend close to ground level. Lighting should be improved, too: non-translucent objects are back-lit, thus appearing as masses of solid black.
I left the building torn by conflicting feelings. Putting on a display of such fascinating array of artworks in city, off the beaten tracks of mass tourism, has been a meritorious undertaking for the local administration; on the other hand, some flaws on the curatorial side may spoil the pleasure of the visit.

It could be unusual to visit an Oriental Arts Museum in Trieste! Situated in a small building near the central Piazza Unità, it is worth a visit for the outstanding Japanese collection. And the bonus is that you have not to pay a ticket to visit the museum!!!

This museum is a great experience of art from China and Japan. The exhibits vary in range from weapons (like swords, etc.) to paintings (like ukiyo-e), clothing (silks, etc.), musical instruments, and other artistic stuff.

Amazing experience. I took advantage of the offer of Ministero dei beni e delle attività culturali e del turismo that every first Sunday of the month gives the opportunity of free entrance. The Museum has a very kind and nice crew that give you every good information and news. The visit at this Muesum is a must when you travelling in Trieste.

This is a small museum with two main sections dedicated to Japan and China. A large number of objects are from the XVIII and XIX centuries when Trieste had links with the Far East.
I loved the kites and the Japanese prints. The museum is in the old part of town and provides a nice break to the bustle of the bars, restaurants and small shops of the area.

It's a very small museum, but it well worths a visit, especially if you like Japan: the Japanese gallery is the biggest one and includes many Ukiyo-e, weapons (including bows) and many other items.
