Trieste has a number of interesting museums, most of them run by the municipality. And these bureaucrats, in their wisdom, chose to keep some of the most interesting ones like the James Joyce / Svevio Literary Museum as well as the history one closed during the high season in July (and by the way, Trieste is the only larger Italian city without a so-called "tourist card").

Fortunately, the Revoltella was open. Set in the magnificent palazzo of its late namesake, it offers not only interesting period exhibits but also a good depiction of what life was like for the very wealthy in 19th century Trieste. Pasquale Revoltella was not only a collector of art and beautiful objects but also an explorer and a successful entrepreneur who among others participated in the financing of the Suet Canal.

What more can you say about the Revoltella Palace Museum except that every art lover must come to see this masterpiece and feel and sit back with the past.
Many thanks to Baron Pasquale Revoltella for this legacy for the future.
Be sure to look back and fly into the past.

First get past the staff smoking in the doorway. Then the best you get from the man at the ticket desk is a glare and grunt. On trying to play the audio guide, having downloaded it to the phone, one discovers that you need a code. That is hidden at the side of the ticket desk. You have to go back to get that.
Lots of staff talking to each other, no help, no advice, no suggestions. We speak Italian but that did not help.
Once you get going the content is rather interesting although many of the modern things were not availed to see. We have no idea why. We were entirely put off by the atypical unfriendly staff. A disgrace, not in any way typical of Italy.

This was advertised as a “modern art museum”, which it does have on the upper 4-6 floors, but the first three are from the later 1800’s and stunningly beautiful. Mostly furnished and decorated, we really enjoyed visiting the property. We weren’t too interested in the modern art, but some people might be, and the upper galleries are very well lit and inviting.

The museum is housed in Revoltella’s home, the adjacent building and a couple of modern additions. The old house portion has some interesting rooms like the library and the formal dining room. There are a couple of rooms with peepholes to see outside. The library has a “secret” swing door that you can pass through. Enjoyed The Kiss by Rovan, Sphere #4 by Pomodoro and the views of the Adriatic Sea from the roof top observation platforms.

Like the Miramare Castle, the Piazza Unita, and the San Giusto Cathedral, the Museo Revoltella should be a part of any visit to Trieste. This elegant home of one of Trieste’s most prominent citizens from the 19th century, Baron Revoltella (who contributed to the building of the Suez Canal) contains a collection of beautiful artwork and furniture which is a feast for the eyes. Be prepared to spend several hours looking around, you won’t be disappointed.

A nice place to wander around for a couple of hours. Part historic house/museum dedicated to the previous owner, and part gallery showcasing a varied collection of art, as well as temporary exhibitions (it was a Martin Parr photography exhibition when we visited). Plenty to see. Entry cost was reasonable. It took us a while to find the room with the temporary exhibition - if you can't find it ask at reception. We wandered around for half an hour trying to find it before we asked for help!

We spent most of our time in the art collection rather than the palazzo; the latter, while interesting, could not compare with the incredible richness of the art collection. The top three floors are given over to the collection of 19th and 20th century Italian painting and sculpture. It’s a large, and consistently excellent, collection, with my favorites Nono’s “Ave Maria” and Bilbao y Martines “La esclava.”

We wandered for at least two hours, aided by the app the docent suggested we download to our phones. Well worth your time.

This is described as a “Museum for the fine & decorative arts collection of a 19th-century baron in his elegant former home.” Mr Revoltella was an extremely successful shipper, who benefitted enormously fro mthe opening of the Suez Canal. Though he lived elsewhere in Trieste, he had built this palace for his entertaining, of which he did a lot. As might be imagined, it was very much over the top, and some of the art was fairly mediocre. However, there was a later addition, which had the city’s collection of 20th century art, which was more interesting. There were also some good views from the upper windows over the ports at Trieste.
