Always fascinating and appealing.
The House of the Knights of Rhodes is a building rich in history that houses Roman, medieval and Renaissance vestiges.
It is the ancient seat of the Roman Priory of the order of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, later known as Rhodes and Malta. It is an incredible location that emerges above the Roman Forum with one of the most beautiful views of Rome.
The internal rooms, a little mysterious and a breathtaking terrace, with its eight arches decorated with fresco paintings on an extraordinary, unique view of the Imperial Fora, the Trajan's Column, the Vittoriano, the Trajan Market, the Torre delle Milizie, and the Torre del Grillo.
The fresco paintings, unfortunately very deteriorated for being exposed to the weather and to atmospheric factors, depict medallions with emperors and landscapes with plants and animals of different species and are attributed to artists from the school of Andrea Mantegna.
Since 1946 the use of the House has been granted to the Sovereign Military Order of Malta: the chapel which was created in the atrium of a Roman residence is dedicated to the patron saint of the Knights, St. John the Baptist.
Guided visits only.

At the end of Via de 'Conti, in Piazza del Grillo, you come across a façade of the house of the Knights of Rhodes.
This elegant palace was first a Basilian monastery in the 11th century AD, it was a possession of the Templars, then the seat of the Roman Priory of the Knights Hospitaller.
The architectural complex was built over the centuries on the Temple of Mars Ultor, leaning against the wall that separated the Forum of Augustus from the 'suburra' (the poor neighborhood north of the imperial fora).
The beautiful loggia dates back to the 15th century.
The windows are very similar to those of Palazzo Venezia which was being completed by Cardinal Barbo.
At the end of the XVIth century the Order chose to relocate to another property on the Aventine hill and the nuns of the "Santissima Annunziata" settled in the house.
In 1946, the house was entrusted to the Order of Malta which owns also a historical palace in Via Condotti.
Unfortunately the demolition works to open the "Via dei Fori Imperiali" in the years 20's-30's destroyed the medieval structures of the old monastery of St. Basil and the Dominican convent of the sixteenth century.
The place is beautiful but difficult to visit.
It is open exclusively for guided tours.
It is something special and from its painted loggia it is possible to enjoy a breathtaking view of the Forum of Augustus and the Markets of Trajan.

Terrific views from the loggia!

I understand that this building is not generally open to the public without reservations, and so I'm doubly glad I was able to visit it on my recent visit to Rome. The rooms are beautiful and the views from the loggia of the Forum of Augustus and the Victor Emmanuel Monument are wonderful!

Take the guided tour

We had a private company event (tour and private dinner) at Casa dei Cavalieri di Rodi. Having a guided tour was great. We got the history of the Order of the Knights of Malta. And had drinks at the outdoor balcony and dinner in the abbey. Great experience. And beautiful views of Rome.
