Today and for much of this month, admission is free since there is an art exhibition inside. Interesting modern Swiss artists, and beautiful Italian architecture. Don’t miss the leaded glass doors at the stairway.

Worth a look.

Historic villa is really something special. It has perfect position, perfect view, nice and maintained garden with pine trees and some palms. Cake of the composition is building on the top of the small hill. Villa is partly over decorated but this is due to style of the period. It was not functional with all rooms in the ground floor, furnished with small details; they refurbished villa a decade ago and now it serves as a study center. For special occasions they organize exhibitions and guided tours (each Monday).

There are a lot of beautiful buildings in Rome---many of them former villas. I wasn't prepared for Villa Maraini, coming upon it by accident. It blew me away! It's on Via Ludovisi, a side street off the famous and luxurious Via Veneto. Walk two blocks along, and there it is on a corner! It's perched on a small hill and looks like it's the "Queen" of the area, looking down upon her lowly subjects!
The front has a terraced garden with statues, and bust sculptures sitting in oval niches above the windows. Framing the villa are tall, majestic umbrella pines and palm trees.
You'll notice the Swiss and Italian flags flying on the roof. The early 20th-century building is now used as the Swiss Institute, the cultural and educational centre for Switzerland in Rome. There's a locked iron gate at the base of the villa, so I assume you can't enter unless you have an appointment. However, they do offer tours on Mondays (3 p.m.; 5 p.m.), but you need to make an advance booking. I hear that the tour is fantastic.
I only admired it from outside, but I want to live in this building---even if it's in just one small room!

For €5 you have a 55 minute walk around some of the Villa, but most Importantly, you get to go to the very, very top of the building where you have views from the second highest vantage point in all of Rome! 360 degrees uninterrupted!

Amazing views.

Just do it. Only in Monday's at 3pm or 4pm. You must book.

Stayed across the street and saw this on TA. Pay attention, tours ONLY at 3:00 and 4:00 PM MONDAYS.
Wondered what the place was...wealthy sugar refinery owner built on top of rubble from neighborhood renovations in late 1800's. They had no children and left property to the Swiss a Institute who give grants to Swiss artists and scientists to further their achievements, creativity and work.
Tour was very so so.....beautiful place oddly kept...pretty random...somewhat obscure.
The view from the very top balcony....up tight spiral staircase....was INCREDIBLE and very worth the 5 euro price of admission.
Nice venue to check out if you're in the neighborhood ona Monday at 3:00. DO PHONE AHEAD!!

We have walked around the outside on multiple occasions and even walked into the grotto on the corner of the property. The quality even from the outside leaves no doubt the family who built this magnificent estate had very good taste in a whimsical way.
We did not know it is open one hour a week (Monday 3 to 4) for 5 euros until today but on our next trip to Rome we will take the opportunity to visit the home inside.

Off the beaten path and not known to very many tourists is the Villa Maraini. Treat yourself and book a tour for 5€ and get some of the best views of Rome from the top of the Villa. Tours are every Monday in Italian, English and French at 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM. It sits on an artificial hilltop and offers some of the most breathtaking views of the capital from its Belvedere tower. The building is surrounded by picturesque gardens which houses a nymphaeum in the shape of a cave.

We were staying close to the Villa and noticed it when we were walking back to the hotel one night. We booked ahead for the Monday 3pm tour (via email from the swiss institute's site). There were 5 people on the tour, 3 german speakers and us (english speakers). The tour guide was very good, switching between both languages and provided a lot of information on the construction of the villa, its grounds, the couple who built it and its current day use.

The villa and the grounds are very pretty.

The tour lasted about 1 hour and the final stop was the rooftop of the building which must have one of the most beautiful views of rome. You can see all of rome from up there!

We didn't know anything about the building. We just happened to pass by it one day while exploring the neighborhood near our hotel. I couldn't help but admire the beauty of the architecture. It was built in the same style as the Villa Medici, and the nearby Villa Borghese. I would have loved to take the tour, but I didn't know about it at the time. Either way, it's a lovely villa that's worth a look if you're in the area.

We did get to see the tour. The tours are given only on Monday at 15:00 and 16:00 and you need to make a reservation at http://www.istitutosvizzero.it/dove/roma/visite or phone (+39 06 420 42 1). Or you can ring the doorbell at the villa and make the reservation in person.

The tour costs 5 euros and it is given in Italian, French and English. If you speak English, do not worry because the important thing is to see the beautiful villa, something that very few visitors in Rome ever see. The architecture is very beautiful and you can see the gardens at the back of the villa also. The tour will bring you inside and you can take as many photos as you want. For those interested in architecture, it is a fantastic place. At the very top of the Belvedere tower, you have the best views in Rome. This is the highest point in Rome after the cupola of St. Peter's. The guide was a young lady who was very friendly and informative.

Truly this was an experience we will never forget, seeing such a beautiful villa. You can see how the rich people lived in the early part of the 20th century in Rome.
