This is really nice if you're in the area, but I wouldn't consider it a must see that you need to cross the city for. Follow the Ama signs through a series of turning alleys. It's inside a building (for some reason I had expected it to be outdoors) so it does have hours when it is open. If it's closed, you won't be able to get through the doors or see anything, but I could not find any official hours posted online. It's really well done and worth a quick look.

I happened to check Trip Advisor on attractions on our way from our room to the train station and found the Sanitation Worker Nativity Scene. It's tucked away so find the signs and follow them once you get to the small side street. Upon arrival at 9am it was empty but an older gentlemen immediately appeared and offered a warm embrace. We were lucky enough to meet Giuseppe himself who gave us a full tour. I don't think he knows any English, but his enthusiasm was infectious. If you plan beforehand, bring a rock from your hometown to add to the impressive collection.

Il Presepe dei Netturbini (Sanitation Workers’ Nativity Scene) is a huge crèche; a model Bethlehem village of Jesus' birth created by a waste collector and his associates. In close proximity to the Vatican, this spacious re-creation of the nativity grotto expresses the devotion of a municipal sanitation employee and includes various items such as fragments from the facade of the Vatican's basilica thrown out after restoration as well as rocks from all over the world. Tucked away in a former storehouse, the scene has been meticulously built since 1972 and now features more than 100 houses individually lit by bulbs representing hearths. It draws plenty of visitors--including a few popes--and grows from year to year, adding new items brought by visitors. In our case, we brought them rocks from Bethlehem, Maryland (in Caroline County); Baltimore, Maryland; and New Durham, New Hampshire. They will add them to the walls they construct around the nativity scene.

This is very close to the entrance for Vatican on the St Pieter side. If you look from the bus station to the other side where is coffee bar. The same street you look at it 50m.

We were very impressed and recommend a visit. Will take you 5 minutes to get there

We visited in mid-November, but this exhibit by the people who clean the streets and collect the trashes in Rome put us already in Christmas spirit. It has a lovely friendly atmosphere, and the visit was topped by meeting in person Giuseppe Ianni, who started the scene 40 years ago. It has been extended regularly and hosted visits by four popes and numerous other notables. Hundreds of miniature figures carrying out their daily jobs in Palestine 2000 years ago.

Free entry. Warmly recommended!

don't be put off by the alley you have to go thru to get to this hidden gem. Inspired by his devotion to God, Giuseppe Ianni has created a nativity scene that is just charming. We were so surprised and overjoyed to not only meet Giuseppe, but he insisted on staging our photos with him! He refused to take a donation, saying he wanted only our prayers. This location has been visited by two popes and Mother Teresa. You will come away feeling so much better about mankind in general!!!

This nativity scene is simply amazing. Giuseppe Ianni, the Rome street cleaner who started this display back in 1972, is a very humble man. He has shared his gift frrom God to create this masterpiece and share it with the world. It is only a short walk from the Vatican. Don't miss this!

Not as big as I expected it to be. But stunningly detailed. I walked around for half an hour or more! Staff is so kind and they even say not to leave a tip( entrance is free),
but to pray for world peace!

We were completely in awe at “Il Presepi dei Netturbini” - the Street Cleaners’ Nativity Scene. It has been up for over 45 years (1972) in Rome, not far from the Vatican. I never knew about it. It started with Giuseppe Ianni, a street cleaner, who said he would build it and the Pope would come to see it. He and his fellow street cleaners were able to reproduce a faithful miniature version of the Nativity in Bethlehem in 3 months. Pope Paul VI was the first Pope to visit in 1974. Over two million people have visited from all walks of life. Surrounding the Nativity set is over 2,234 stones coming from people from all over the world and which are embedded on the outer wall and on the base of the crib. They told me if I bring a stone on my next visit, they will add it to the wall. We will be doing that and bring two stones - one from Baltimore and one from Bethlehem, Maryland.

Each year the work is expanded and enriched, all the while remaining faithful to the style of building typically found in Palestine 200 years ago. Its distinctive characteristic is the idea of depicting, together with the Nativity, the communion of different people. We do strongly suggest you go and bring your kids to visit this wonderful Nativity that can be visited daily.
