A well spend afternoon to the area, with a walk to the park near there!

Fascinating piece of Industrial Engineering
Sep 2017 • Pasangan
Visited here on 05/09/17 the main attraction is the old boat lift which is a superb piece of industrial engineering. It used to lift boats on the Dortmund - Ems canal.
There is an attached museum and boat yard.
A short 5-10 minute walk will take you to the old lock, the new boat lift which is also disused and the current operational lock.
If you are lucky you will get to see the new lock in operation which is impressively large.
There is also a museum next to the new lock which you have to pass through to view the new lock in operation.
The combi ticket covers all these attractions and was a great value at €4.70.
We spent 4 hours wandering around and there is an old London bus cafe and boat trips provided there is a minimum of 10 persons on board.
A bit off the beaten track in the middle of the Ruhr but well worth a visit.

Impressive piece of old engineering

We were very impressed with this enormous construction. You can climb all the way up to the bridge and go inside various spaces below. The next door museum explains how it all works. It's also a nice area to walk around, and there's a terrace for drinks and a snack.

Pleasantly outside

This is very different from all other sites. The ship lift can be entered. Very well done because you can truly imagine how it is to lift a ship. Many models inside demonstrate how the cylinders work to get the job done. The site is quite large and you need time to visit everything (we did not). Also when the weather is good there is a beergarten for a drink and snack.

Formidable ship-lift
Feb 2015 • Sendiri
This is one of the finest pieces of industrial heritage in the German Ruhr-area. The lift itself is the highlight. From the higher parts one gets a nice view over the environment. In additional buildings one can see exhibitions with steam engines and about the history of the ship lift, and about a number of shipwrecks (not sure whether the latter is permanent). One can also visit a museum ship. There are buses coming here, but it's not the easiest place to reach by public transport.

Worth the trip
Jul 2015 • Pasangan
We were staying in Mulheim and it took us an hour and three quarters to get there by train and bus. This is a visit for those particularly interested in industrial history. However, it was certainly worth it as the ship lift is beautiful and interesting and set in a lovely location. The little museum next to it is also interesting. Fortunately the day we visited was warm and sunny which meant we could wander around the exhibits and have a snack lunch in the open air café.

A Bit Different and Interesting
Jun 2015 • Keluarga
This open-air museum on the Dortmund-Ems canal details the history of shipping in this area. The Henrichenburg ship-lift is the highlight. You can go in and under and see how it all worked, then go on top to see how far the ships had to be lifted. You can also go in old barges and there is an exhibition on shipwrecks too. Overall very interesting and good value. Loses a star though because of lack of available food when we were there during the week.
