The cave is situated in a former gypsum mine not far from the town of Friedrichroda. The Thüringerwaldbahn has a stop nearby and from there it is possible to walk up to the visitor center.
Tours are in German only and available several times a day at EUR 9, EUR 7.50 for holders of a Kurkarte. Please note that it is rather cold in the mine, so it may be a good idea to bring a warm jacket.
Our guide gave information about the historic mining and the life of the miners. The cave was found by coincidence and the gypsum crystals were formerly used by artists to produce Virgin Mary works of art, hence the name of the crystals.
The cave was really beautiful whereas the mining part was less interesting to us.

A must in Friedrichroda, 45 minutes duration, good explanation and nice views of christals. Take the small tram from Friedrichroda even it is only one stop.

This is actually a very small place. Short walks take you to the two floors with very few (but interesting) exhibits.
Key attraction is the "Marienglas", really gorgeous natural crystals covering all walls of a mid size hall. Lit beautifully.
Guides seem to have their heart in it, offering lots of facts, and anecdotes.
Tour takes about 45 minutes, so squeeze this in with other activities on the same day.
It seems that some couples choose to get married here!
Free parking, a short walk uphill to the small ticket / souvenir shop.
Two separate restaurants outside offer German traditional food (we did not try either one at 10 am).

Marienglashöhle are man made caves inside a tunnel.
The caves are approachable by a little tram that runs almost once an hour. Alternately, you can walk for approx 20 mins from Rheinhardbrunn.
The guided tour was unfortunately in English so we didnt understand much but the caves especially the lowest Level is beautiful. They do a Group Picture which can be purchased later.

I just had 3 friends from the USA visiting who actually were very keen on visiting a cave, especially a crystal cave. So we showed them to this place. We just managed to get the last guided tour. The service people were very friendly and helpful and gave us even a nice group discount :) The guide, a lady, knew lost about the cave and its history and was very helpful as well. I could ask her several questions and she was always patient and friendly. Especially since I had to translate everything in English and needed to ask a few more times. All in all a great little cave with real crystals... in most others you mainly find the dripstones. 5 stars for very friendly people, great service and happy guests!

What I experienced here yesterday (31.8.2024) mocks every description.
I have registered my tour group (36 people) for a guided tour at 15:45.
An hour earlier, I was called to see if we could get there 15 minutes earlier.
But I could not guarantee this at such short notice.
I was dealt with with with the following sentence:
"Then you won't be able to get in there, the group size is almost reached anyway."
I should have taken the next tour with my group half an hour later.
But this absolutely did not fit into my schedule of the two-day tour with many planned highlights including a punctual check-in at the hotel.
The visit to the cave, which is therefore not possible, caused a lot of resentment among my tour group.
Nobody can understand such business conduct.

Our 45-strong youth group was addressed in an age-appropriate manner and kept entertained with really interesting topics and information throughout the entire tour. Brilliant! Thank you! A small, beautiful cave with an interesting history! We adults learned a lot too!
