We loved our visit to this enormous church. The overwhelming size dominates the center of the old city. You have to pay a little bit to enter, but it is worth the price as the decorations are lovely. Some pictures and information of the damage during WWII when the church burned and the bells fell to the floor.

One of the 5 main historic churches in Lübeck, St. Mary's is beautiful inside and out. Sadly, it was completely destroyed in World War II, but was fully rebuilt by 1980. I found the wood-framed 24 hour clock and yearly calendar, including the phases of the moon and constellations, particularly interesting. Johann Sebastian Bach played in this church in 1705 and there is a stone plaque on the wall commemorating it. They also display historical information regarding the history of the building and its reconstruction, although some of it is only in German. I also found the brick flying buttresses on the exterior of particular interest as well. Finally, there is a moving modern art sculpture laid out on the floor inside that is quite unique. You can do a thorough visit in under an hour.
