I liked this museum, though it could probably use a little sprucing up. It's actually larger than it appears and there are many items to view inside. The museum, as the name suggests, is dedicated to the city and its history. I found it to be quite good and an interesting history lesson. Tickets are rather cheap, so why not go if you have some time? If I remember correctly, each section of the museum focuses on a specific period in history and there was an introduction sign in English for each section, but for the items on display the description was only in German.
There are toilets and a gift shop. There's no AC, so it was rather warm on the upper floor.

With a story to tell like Düsseldorf's, the city museum could be the best choice to learn about the city and the Rhein area. But it's quite fragmented and with bad continuity - it's not quite clear what they actually want to mediate to the visitor. Supposed to focus on both the history of the town and the art and artists of the town, but the effect is not convincing.
Sorry to say: it gives an uncommitted impression.

Exploring the city in heavy rain can take the fun out of it and that’s about where I was when I came across the Stadtmuseum.
Entry was free with my Düsseldorf card which saved me €4 and there are lockers to put away rucksacks, wet coats etc for a refundable €1.
The museum is interesting especially the city planning and there is plenty to keep you interested until the rain stops.
Some of the exhibits were odd however and in one room you would have historical articles and the next Chinese style lanterns.
I found it didn’t flow which was distracting.
However there are some items that are worth the visit alone. My favourite being the signed start point of the 2017 Tour de France that is covered with all of the riders autographs.

Enter this museum ONLY if you might be interested in the history of the City (Stadt) of Dusseldorf, otherwise don't waste your time. My wife and I just happen to like the history of anything. For a city museum we thought it was interesting and educating. The museum traces the history of Dusseldorf from its founding to present day.
If you are looking for something to do and have been everywhere else in Dusseldorf visit this museum. Don't put it first on your list.

The city museum of Dusseldorf is located beside Orangerie street in the south part of the old city where the entrance fee is 4 Euros per adult and photography is not allowed. The museum is housed on three floors in an old stately building and is the oldest museum in Dusseldorf.
Firstly there was a section covering the Bronze age to the Dark ages where the exhibits were examples of pottery, jewellery and weapons that were found in the region. This followed by another section about the Duchies of Julich-Kleve-Berg from the 16th to the 18th centuries. I found this section very interesting in the way this Duchy interacted within the Holy Roman Empire and later the Austro-Hungarian Empire. There were ample paintings of principal actors, family trees and general wealth of the Duchy during this period. It must be noted that Anne of Cleves (Anna von Kleve) was the fourth wife of Henry VIII of England. The rest of the exhibits after this basically consisted of photography and paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries.
It was a pity photography was not allowed as I like to look at photographs of exhibits when I get home for further study as time limitations, when visiting a museum, means that sometimes you cannot get a full look at everything. It would also be helpful if a simple map in English was provided showing the various museum sections so that you keep within the historical timeline of exhibits as it so easy to get disorientated within the 3 floors.

This museum has a great story to tell about Dusseldorf, but it doesn't tell it well. It is badly organized so the historical time flow is not always clear. There are many empty rooms with no evidence that they will ever be used.

Good exploration of the city's history, and free if you turn up at the right time. Shame you can't take photos inside though.

Had a free pass with the Dusseldorf card. Went with my teenage daughter. It was really quiet with only one other visitor in the whole building which was a shame because we saw some really interesting things. We loved the medieval artifacts and paintings.
There could have been a lot more on the war with the bishop in the middle ages which ended up with the children celebrating with cartwheels, (the symbol of Düsseldorf), but surprisingly nothing was mentioned.
We liked the old suitcase with a fanciful model of Düsseldorf inside of it. We also liked the little ivory people with cut outs of their anatomy for students to learn about the body.
All in all, it was ok. We spent time together and had fun reading about the various people important to the history of the city.
Does need a re model though to bring in the 21st century, like a movie on the city perhaps?

I visited the museum on a Friday in June, and enjoyed the outing. The museum was interesting, and I learned much about the city's history, from its beginning to today. The museum is a block east of the Rhein, and an easy walk to many of the other sights in Dusseldorf.
Note: I had visited Cologne's city museum the day before -- if you visit either museum, keep the ticket if you are going on to the other city, it can be used for the other city as well within a certain number of days.
