I really enjoyed my visit with friends. The tour, although in German, was very interesting. I was fortunate that my German friends were able to translate when I didn’t understand. The history of the mine was interesting to hear. The displays of photographs and artefacts were very good. I loved the architecture and was so pleased that these wonderful buildings were saved from demolition! We also had a super lunch of currywurst and frites in the restaurant. I would definitely recommend a visit here!

This is a well-preserved colliery, essentially the 1950s or 1960s state of an 1890s building. I have previously visited some much older ones and some more recent collieries, but this was genuinely more interesting. There were the "old-school" touches such as marble insulators throughout, but also some true "technical masterpieces", incl. very powerful compressors to power the pneumatic drills a mile away (500m below and then some through the level), hot showers, washing machines, elaborate hanging systems for the laundry, and many "artistic features", especially in stained glass and inscriptions. A lovely site.

This museum is a must-see attraction when visiting Dortmund. Most of the buildings of the colliery were built in solid brickwork and are an impressive example of the industrialization of the early 1900s. One of the highlights is the central engine house built in iron framework construction with infilling of red brickwork. The Art Nouveau styled main entrance shows a lead glazing of blue, green and-glass. Also the engines on display are inmpressive. Other buildings on the site include administration bureaus, blacksmith's and carpenter's shop, first-aid and fire station with stable, pithead baths, tools store and the central gateway. The former stable now houses a restaurant with traditional food of the region. Don't miss the Currywurst!

Great place to see the remnants of coal mining in Germany. Today there is only open-pit mining for lignite. Mining operations below ground became much too expensive and so this industry along with its distinctive towers (pit-head frames) became redundant. Some are turned into museums.

Unfortunately you cannot enter a mining shaft here. But it is still very impressive to see the heavy machinery that was considered high-tech at the time.

Interesting are the urban developments that came with the coal mining business. The buildings are made from bricks that gave them some sort of industrial beauty. A similar look have residential houses around a former coal mine. They are also made from bricks and they are usually small, because a coal miner back in the days couldn’t afford a big house.

This industry was made the “Ruhrgebiet” (River Ruhr Region) famous and attracted many businesses; especially heavy industry like steel production.

For all the English reading folk out there, just skip the 1st building, it's all German. And not a lot to just look at. The 2nd building we went into was the centre one and all if it's displays had English. The tower that you can climb also has English displays. It's very interesting history and the buildings are beautiful. I recommend climbing to the top of the tower, great view of the land.

Besides the brilliant state that Zeche Zollern presents itself in, it is also surprisingly cheap to access and has a lot to offer. Exhibitions, architecture, educational stuff and a lot of local history. Unfortunately, we had only two hours to spare, but I am sure you can easily spend half a day there without getting bored. If you are interested in the history of the industrial development in the 20th century and how it influenced the whole Ruhrgebiet, this is definitely for you. But even if that's not your thing, you can also just come for a stroll, climb one of the towers and enjoy the panoramic view and the stunning industrial architecture.
