Interactive and enjoyable
Feb 2020 • Bisnis
Thought this museum was far better than the nearby and perhaps more heralded chocolate museum. Very interactive which appeals to children of all ages and equally interesting for inquisitive adults. Took a large group of 14 year old school students who largely enjoyed their experience.

Rather obscured museum (quite literally) I would not recommend
Jan 2020
Now, my girlfriend and me, decided to visit this museum one January Saturday, and...I found it quite strange.

By the end of the visit, I found it quite terrible. :/

So let's start from the beginning.

The museum is located near Cologne's Chocolate Museum so the public transportation is well established here.

We arrived by car and parked in the underground garage, but that turned out to be so disgustingly expensive that - I personally RECOMMEND EVERYONE TO COME WITH THE PUBLIC TRANSPORT. Considering the parking prices in the underground garage, I give you my personal guarantee that you will not regret this.

The museum is, as far as I could observe, fitted for disabled persons (this is not hard to achieve as it has three, quite simple floors).

Now, in the very entrance, the museum leaves the impression of rather - unarranged. I find this quite suitable for certain thematic exhibitions like youth inventions or such, but considering that this was supposed to be German Sports museum, I found that quite suspicious.

Furthermore, I had to duck as someone was evidently shooting the football somewhere near, and so hard that it was impossible to communicate with the reception desk clerk. Turned out that museum had football goal section in which young ones could play with the ball and shoot for the goal. Turns out that one teenager was doing exactly that and - nobody in the museum could normally communicate because of loud "thuds".

The exhibition actually begins on the first floor. That is, if you don't accidentally walk into somebody because, the weakest point and the strongest criticism for this place comes to be the most tangible here - the lights and lightning.

Namely, as if the management is scared that somebody might steal some of the, rather scarce, artefacts or take a photo of some, rather internet available, information, the whole museum is lighted as poorly as the wild west brothel. And, I am not joking, in certain places, man has to hold to the wall, not to trip and fall over something. The lightning is - absolute disaster.

Moving on the contents; quite honestly, the whole museum looks like somebody took olympic encyclopaedia of German sports and, quite literally, posted each page on the wall, one next to another. Such an insurmountable mess of, almost fine printed, information, just sporadically intertwined with scarcely arranged artefacts.

This made the lightning arrangement even more strange, because, why would anyone want to take a photo of the information that is, quite honestly, publicly available from almost thousands of sources and....why would anyone want to come to the museum where the lightning is so poor that none of that information can be read?

From some interactive fun, there was a small wind tunnel with a fan propelled by energy that comes from your cycling (and that lasted the whole funny 30 seconds) and the football goal in the basement. For god's sake people, it is an Olympic Sports museum - HAVE SOME SPORTS in there!

Yes, there were sportyards on the roof and that was fine. But it was a murky winter day and, quite honestly, one can find those anywhere around residential areas. For free.

Finally, I accept that there are some people that would want to take a stroll through the history of german sports and that is why I give this review 3 stars. However....in my opinion....save your eyes.

And money.

On another note, the bar looked nice. :)
Although deserted. :/
We did not go. :|

Cool looking building.

My twin brother Stephen and I were visiting the wonderful Harbour Christmas Market and the delicious Chocolate Museum and viewed this cool looking former Dock building now converted into The German Sports And Olympic Museum.
Although I ventured into the museum I loved the architecture, looks cool as do the metal athletes outside the main entrance to the museum, took a few photos before moving on.
Easy to locate along I'm Zollhafen, well worth a visit.

Surprisingly interesting
Nov 2019 • Keluarga
Popped in expecting more of an exhibition than a museum to maybe kill an hour but we spent several hours easily with our teenagers. Bit of a slow burner but once we hit the Olympic section we loved it. Really interesting footage (would of liked seats to actually sit and watch the award winning sports film) and plenty of hands on things to try (boxing, long jump, fitness tests). We tried it all and had a real laugh doing it (possibly a little too loudly for a museum but they didn’t throw us out!). The security guy chatted to us a few times too and had some interesting anecdotes about the museum. Also had great fun trying to copy the fitness moves with the wooden batons and in better weather we would of played football on the roof. Really great little museum and we all preferred it to the much busier and more commercial chocolate museum that’s it’s next to.

I had a bit of time to kill in Cologne and rather than visit the chocolate factory I decided to visit the German Sports & Olympic Museum.

I'm really glad I did as it was very interesting. As well as giving you the history of the Olympic Games there is also information about German sportsmen and women as well as many important exhibits that are part of German/Olympic sports history.

There is an excellent exhibition about the 1936 Berlin Olympics which was controversial. There is not a massive gift shop however there some nice sports related gifts that can be purchased. There is a cafe however I did not visit.

Don’t fancy the chocolate museum then pop in next door to this excellent museum which charts the history of the Olympics and German sporting achievement, the exhibits are varied and well set out with something for every sports fan. Would give yourself up to two hours to fully absorb.

This is often missed because most people go to the adjacent chocolate museum but this is much better!!! So if only visiting a short time choose this museum instead

Great for everyone

Wonderfully laid out and detailed for those who are athletes and of course everyone. From the early Roman times to the present, with everything in between. The rooftop is an interactive football (soccer for us)field where one can play.
