interesting and alternative museum about old and new facts with regards to customs and trade! Also, it is a nice spot along the Speicherstadt.

Fascinating history of customs enforcement in Germany
Jul 2019
Exhibits demonstrate how illicit materials are smuggled, what kinds of goods are smuggled, historic uniforms of customs officers, and more.

Novel museum

Plenty to see about the history of the Customs Service but little of the description is in English. Interesting examples of methods and ruses employed by smugglers. Moored outside is a Customs launch which can be explored.

Interesting idea for a musuem, but ...

A small museum on an unlikely topic, and they get full marks for the attempt. Bright, novel, airy and new -- yet a bit thin, as this is a subject which may not offer a lot in the way of tangible artifacts. This makes the written descriptions all the more important. But most were in German only. For almost all tourists today English is their international language and it is frustrating to walk past exhibits that are not self explanatory and do not have translations but which you can tell have something interesting to say to those who can read the captions and see the artifacts come to life.

But, it's only 2 Euros and is right in the middle of a lot of other Speicherstadt attractions where you might find yourself already and there's not a lot to lose in a quick look. An interesting idea for a museum, but for a non-German-speaker much of its interest is lost.

A fascinating and well designed musuem on the history of customs

Who would have though a museum on the history of Customs could be so interesting. It starts with tax collection in Roman times and comes right up to date with ways of smuggling used today. It's quite small but very cheap to get in and well-worth an hour or two. It's also in a lovely building at the Hamburg port.

A nice surprise

We missed the chocolate museum but the Zollmuseum was a nice break on our walk to the Miniatureworld. A lot of nice information and a good opportunity to talk about international trade with my two daughters (7 and 9 years old). Also a very cheap experience with a price tag of 2€ per adult and children for free.

We came across this small compact museum whilst walking from the city centre back to our cruise ship. This did mean that our time was a little restricted but it was still possible to view all the exhibits relating to the history of the German customs and border activities. The exhibits, with descriptions mainly in the German language, are on two floors and range from uniforms and equipment to methods of counterfeiting and smuggling. Overall an interesting and worthwhile visit. The entry fee of two euros is not expensive and provides good value.

Definitely worth a visit! They only charge €2 and it's free now because they are undergoing some renovation right now. Quite educational.
