Very interesting relic of Socialist East Berlin! I was staying in Alexanderplatz so this made a great first stop on a walk down the Karl Marx Allee. The murals are vibrant and engaging and an interesting snapshot of aspirations that perhaps ultimately were not realized.

The highrise was built between 1962 and 1964 and designed by architect Hermann Henselmann. The mosaic "Our Life" was made during construction by Walter Womacka.

The mural is artwork that celebrated teachers.
The building is East German architecture that takes on the US skyscrapers. Built in the 1960s, It looks a bit Brutalist to me.
In Alexanderplatz, you will come across this on the HOHO tour.

Haus des Lehrers (German for House of the teacher) features an imposing mosaic frieze by Walter Womacka, consisting of about 800,000 coloured glass tiles, depicting life and work in the GDR. Located in Alexanderplatz in Berlin. The frieze is affectionately known as the abdominal bandage, surrounding a block of what are now offices, designed by Hermann Henselmann between 1962 and 1964.

Excellent mural which was visible from our hotel room window. We wandered along and had a good look around, you can see all sides quite easily. The quality of the art is amazing and there's a deep nostalgic undertone to the work.

This is a remain from the "socialist" art - a huge mosaic on the walls of the building, showing the importance of learning. Just pass by.

We got caught in a rain storm waiting in garage the street from this, and took pictures. did not know it was an attraction until now! I was more impressed with this artwork than the Eastside Gallery. If you are nearby have a look.

Just off Alexanderplatz, on the much-trafficked Otto-Braun Strasse, it is a typical building of the Communist Era, which shows here its best side: the building is in fact surrounded by a beautiful mosaic by Walter Womacka representing the importance of education and of teachers.
As in many other pieces of Socialist art, it shows the whole people involved in progress. I know that real Communism was not a paradise, but these ideals still appeal to me.
They still look naive and pure.
Go and see the mural if you are in Berlin.

Worth keeping an eye out for one of the last remaining icons from the soviet era. Visible from the bus tour we took.

Look out for this mural if you are on bus trip around Berlin. Wrapping itself around an ugly modernist skyscraper built in 1964, know as House of Teachers. At 125m long it is one of the largest murals in Europe. Entitled ‘Unser Leben’ (Our Life) by Walter Womacka, it shows typical scenes of how life was like in the GDR in the early 60's. Today the building houses lawyers and Nokia. Look out for it on the corner as you leave Karl Marx Allee and turn left into Alexamderplatz.
